  • Attempts to Build Postwar Europe from Below in Stuttgart

    Bettina Severin-Barboutie•ARTICLE•Journal of Migration History•2021

On May 2, 1964, a so-called Emigrationsparlament held its constituent meeting in the house of the Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund ( dgb ) in Stuttgart. The meeting was opened by a speech of the parliament’s president, Antonio Maspoli, in which he outlined the aims of the new institution and coined the phrase ‘The emigrant is a worker from and for Europe and Europe is his country’. In the months following the Emigrationsparlament gathered several time…

  • Migration, Memory, and Diversity

    Open Access•Bettina Severin-Barboutie•ARTICLE•German History•2019

In 2014, the historian Mathias Beer pleaded for a renewal of Baden-Württemberg’s migration history. He suggested an ‘integrative migration history’, in which historic migrations to Baden-Württemberg would no longer be investigated separately, but rather in a holistic fashion. Such an inclusive approach, he argued, would have several advantages. It would facilitate insights both into Baden-Württemberg’s migration history as a whole and into analog…

  • Multiple Deutungen und Funktionen

    Bettina Severin-Barboutie•ARTICLE•Geschichte und Gesellschaft•2018

This article explores the organized journey of foreign workers recruited for the labor market in the Federal Republic of Germany between the 1950s and the 1970s. It argues that the actors who planned the migrants’ journey to and arrival in Germany oscillated between making generalizations about them and distinguishing between them, and, when dealing with Germany’s Nazi past, between cluelessness and caution. Secondly, it demonstrates that the jou…

Jana Tschurenev, Mustafa Gencer et al.•BOOK•Transnationale Bildungsräume•2013

  • From the city perimeters to the centre of the political arena

    Bettina Severin-Barboutie•ARTICLE•Urban Research & Practice•2012

The outbreak of violence in one of Lyon's suburbs in the early 1980s prompted the French government to launch a political programme for deprived urban neighbourhoods in the outskirts of French cities. Called ‘social development of urban neighbourhood’, the new programme marked a political shift in how the Parisian government dealt with French cities. Not only had there been a shift of responsibility to the local level but there was also a public–…
