This article explores the organized journey of foreign workers recruited for the labor market in the Federal Republic of Germany between the 1950s and the 1970s. It argues that the actors who planned the migrants’ journey to and arrival in Germany oscillated between making generalizations about them and distinguishing between them, and, when dealing with Germany’s Nazi past, between cluelessness and caution. Secondly, it demonstrates that the journey was subject to international negotiations and cooperation, that it represented both a business venture and a performance, and that it was shot throughwith contradictions. In addition, the article points out that the journey was experienced by the travelers in many different ways, despite organizers’ efforts to standardize it
