When grieving adults support grieving children: Tensions in a peer support bereavement group programme
This paper analyses the training and supervision offered to volunteers at a bereavement centre for children in the Northeast United States. Drawing on interviews with 15 former volunteers, five current volunteers, and two staff members, the analysis illustrates how the feeling rules of the organisation shape interactional dynamics during group supervision meetings, and how these organisational processes reflect broader themes in contemporary talk…
Facing Death: Buddhist and Western Hospice Approaches
This article draws on ethnographic data to examine how moral person-hood, emotions, and social relationships are constructed quite differently within two organizations with the similar goal of holistically caring for the dying. Workplace Hazards, Unions, and Coping Styles
Coping styles influence levels of stress. This study examines how workers cope with hazards at work and whether unions help work ers cope more effectively with those hazards. We surveyed 237 workers at a chemical plant in Louisiana and found that perceived exposure to fire and explosions at work increased workers' levels of anxiety. Problem-focused strategies to cope with those potential risks reduced anxiety and depression. Aside from supervisor…
