  • Social License to Operate (SLO)

Open Access•Kalowatie Deonandan, Jacqueline Ashley Schoenfeld et al.•ARTICLE•The Extractive Industries and…•2024•Cited by: 4•References: 9

This paper contends that while Social License to Operate (SLO) emphasizes the importance of community inputs in project approval, in fact, it is a private governance scheme that accords only superficial importance to the engagement process. Focusing on the uranium mining industry in Saskatchewan, Canada, and drawing on insights from interviews with industry and non-industry stakeholders, this research identifies various impediments that preclude …

  • Indigenous women’s anti-mining activism

    Kalowatie Deonandan, Rebecca Tatham et al.•ARTICLE•Gender & Development•2017•Cited by: 6•References: 2

Focusing on the struggle against the Fenix mine in El Estor Guatemala, this article argues that women are disproportionately affected by resource development; and that women’s activism against mining is also gendered, in the sense that they are often distinct from men’s strategies and are rooted in women’s experiences as women, and as indigenous women within a particular socioeconomic and historical context. We draw on original data gathered from…

  • Evaluating the effectiveness of the anti-mining movement in Guatemala

The objective of this article is to investigate why the resistance to the Marlin mine in Guatemala has been unsuccessful in terms of having any of its demands met by the state or the mining company. Guided by the literature on social movement theory, the analysis focuses on two key themes, the context or political opportunities and message framing, to illustrate the challenges confronting the resistance. With respect to the context, the analysis …

  • The Helms-Burton Bill and Canada’s Cuba Policy

    Open Access•Kalowatie Deonandan•ARTICLE•Policy and Society•2005•References: 4

This analysis reassesses Canada’s Cuba policy by challenging the prevailing view that it has been largely independent of the US. The thesis posited here is that despite its opposition to the US’ Helms-Burton legislation (which seeks to increase economic pressures on the Cuban economy by penalising foreigners who conduct business with the island) the Canadian government has been pursuing a Cuba strategy which closely converges with the Americans, …

  • Learning from Somalia

    Open Access•Kalowatie Deonandan•ARTICLE•Peace Review•1994•Cited by: 1

With the end of the Cold War, interstate conflict has significantly decreased, while intrastate conflict has soared. Unfortunately, the international system's conflict resolution mechanisms, such as international and regional organizations, have been devised primarily for settling the former rather than the latter. Recently, states have had to adapt these instruments to cope with the changing nature of conflicts. The United Nations peacekeeping m…
