Streaming bloody murder
In 2021, three documentary series revitalised the unsolved murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier in 1996 in West Cork, Ireland, for a global audience of true crime enthusiasts. This article analyses the podcast West Cork (Audible 2018/iTunes 2021) and two streaming series, Murder at the Cottage: The Search for Justice for Sophie (Sky Crime 2021) and Sophie: A Murder in West Cork (Netflix 2021) and argues that they conferred documentary celebrity on…
Queering the pulpit
This article examines the unlikely ways that media celebrity enabled priests and nuns in Ireland to make gay and lesbian identities visible. Despite the fact that sex among men was criminalised in Ireland until 1993, Catholic priests and nuns during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s used their mass media celebrity to make same-sex desire and LGBTQIA+ identities visible in popular media, especially through the public service broadcaster RTÉ. The article…
RePresenting Bisexualities
Is bisexuality coming out in America? Bisexual characters are surfacing on popular television shows and in film. Newsweek proclaims that a new sexual identity is emerging. RePresenting Bisexualities seeks to answer these questions, integrating a recognition of bisexual desire with new theories of gender and sexuality. Despite the breakthroughs in gender studies and queer studies of recent years, bisexuality has remained largely unexamined. Proble…
Brand Royal
Focusing on mainstream and tabloid news reporting and ancillary texts, this article analyses the media presentation of Meghan Markle’s intersectional identities through a rhetoric of the feuding famous family. We argue that the media discourse centred on family conflict and domestic drama used to characterise Markle’s position as a royal during the Brexit era both surfaces and suppresses the significance of her existential challenge to the normat…
From Screwdriver to Dildo
This essay examines the depiction of labor in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black, paying specific attention to gender and race. It argues that the program’s interest in the historical link between coerced prison labor and enslavement in the United States, as well as the more recent implication of prison privatization in the neoliberal assault on labor rights, is undermined by its privileging of affective and interpersonal dynamics over po…
Two Bad Girls
Kids, Rock and Couples
This essay comments on the simultaneous foregrounding and erasure of bisexuality in contemporary cinema and television, arguing that the treatment of bisexuality as an impossibility or enigma (which bisexual theorists can and often do treat in productive ways) is related to the hegemony of the couple in the dominant heterosexual culture and homosexual subcultures
Irish in Us
Bi Film-Video World High and Low
This essay examines two recent U.S. films that explicitly connect art and women's bisexuality
The Celtic blue note
The abstract is included in the text
Performance and Persona in the U.S. Avant-Garde
Maya Deren's persona illustrates the similarities between practices of stardom in mainstream and alternative film, and Deren's use of film as a performative art highlights the relationship between film images and persona
Resisting/Performing/Femininity
Karen Finley prefaces her performance piece The Constant State of Desire (TCSD) with a performance.1 Finley walks onstage, telling the audience that she wants to say something first. In a meta-reflexive gesture, she describes how nervous she is prior to performances. She sits calmly in front of the audience and lists her body's hysterical symptomatology in the face of its impending exhibition: she smokes, she has the jitters, she is nauseated and…
