  • Apollo in Early Opera: Adapting His Multiple Ancient Cultic Functions to a Secular Renaissance Pantheon

Judith Solomon•ARTICLE•Greek and Roman Musical Studies•2025

Apollo’s ancient origins resulted in a variety of cultic functions and mythological associations. As the Greco-Roman god of music, it was as if Apollo played a symbolic role in overseeing the development of late-Renaissance/early Baroque musical theater. His multiple cultic functions and associated mythological narratives enabled librettists to portray him on stage as not just the god of music and father of Orpheus, but also as the lover of Daphn…

  • Youth sport during the Covid-19 pandemic: The influence of race and affluence on parents’ perspectives of youth participation

    Open Access•Amand L Hardiman, Daniel Fleming et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences & Humanities Open•2024

COVID-19 restrictions led to a nearly 50% decline in youth sport participation across the United States (Dorsch et al., 2021). Today, communities and sport organizations have resumed sport. However, research has yet to fully elucidate how COVID-19 restrictions impacted youth participation across different sociodemographic groups during the pandemic. The present study explored the association between race and affluence and their relationship with …

  • Knowledge Production and Epistemic Decolonization at the End of Pax Americana

Naoki Sakai, Judith Solomon et al.•BOOK•Knowledge Production and…•2023

"This book critically analyzes the global hegemony of the United States - a hegemony whose innovative aspect consists in articulating postcoloniality to imperial control - in relation to knowledge and knowledge production. Through targeted case studies on the historical relationship between regional areas and the United States, the authors explore possibilities and obstacles to epistemic decolonization. By highlighting the connection between the …

  • The Waning of Greco-Roman Operas in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Eras

Judith Solomon, Jon Solomon•ARTICLE•Illinois Classical Studies•2023

The Greco-Roman tradition prevailed at the Paris Opéra from 1647 until the Revolution. Losing its royal privilege and criticized for presenting ancient mythological kings onstage, the Opéra produced works set in Republican Rome and democratic Greece, e.g., Horatius Coclès (1794) and Miltiade à Marathon (1793). The classical tradition continued in the use of ancient authors like Anacreon (Anacréon chez Polycrate—1797) and Euripides (Médée—1797) as…

  • Mythography and the Reception of Classical Mythology in the Renaissance, 1340–1600

Judith Solomon, Jon Solomon•CHAPTER•The Oxford Handbook of Greek and…•2022

This chapter surveys the Greco-Roman mythological tradition from the mid-14th century to the late 16th. It begins with Bersuire, who continued the medieval tradition of allegorizing Ovid’s Metamorphoses, and Boccaccio, who continued the genealogical tradition in his Genealogia deorum gentilium and wrote several additional influential works. Boccaccio was the first humanist scholar to incorporate ancient Greek texts, albeit only the Homeric epics.…

This essay presents a genealogy of the postcolonial/postimperial apparatus of area and charts its contemporary mutation in relation to the transition currently underway from industrial capitalism to bioinformatic capitalism. The restructuring of the university into a service industry that debuted in the 1990s has dramatically affected the milieu in which area studies are practiced. The key to understanding this dramatic change is to be found in t…

  • Disorganized attachment in infancy: A review of the phenomenon and its implications for clinicians and policy-makers

    Open Access•Pehr Granqvist, L Alan Sroufe et al.•ARTICLE•Attachment & Human Development•2017

Disorganized/Disoriented (D) attachment has seen widespread interest from policy makers, practitioners, and clinicians in recent years. However, some of this interest seems to have been based on some false assumptions that (1) attachment measures can be used as definitive assessments of the individual in forensic/child protection settings and that disorganized attachment (2) reliably indicates child maltreatment, (3) is a strong predictor of path…

  • Logistical Species and Translational Process: A Critique of the Colonial-Imperial Modernity

  • The Idea of Art Music in a Commercial World, 1800-1930

Open Access•Judith Solomon, David C H Wright et al.•BOOK•Idea of Art Music in a Commercial…•2016

Art and money, culture and commerce, have long been seen as uncomfortable bedfellows. Indeed, the connections between them have tended to resist full investigation, particularly in the musical sphere. The Idea of Art Music in a Commercial World, 1800-1930 , is a collection of essays that present fresh insights into the ways in which art music, i.e., classical music, functioned beyond its newly established aesthetic purpose (art for art's sake) an…

  • The Politics of Attachment: Lines of Flight with Bowlby, Deleuze and Guattari

    Open Access•R Duschinsky, Marinella Greco et al.•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2015•Cited by: 11•References: 7

Research on attachment is widely regarded in sociology and feminist scholarship as politically conservative - oriented by a concern to police families, pathologize mothers and emphasize psychological at the expense of socio-economic factors. These critiques have presented attachment theory as constructing biological imperatives to naturalize contingent, social demands. We propose that a more effective critique of the politically conservative uses…

  • Wait Up: Attachment and Sovereign Power

Open Access•R Duschinsky, Marinella Greco et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Politics…•2014•Cited by: 8•References: 8

Sociologists and feminist scholars have, over many decades, characterised attachment as a social construction that functions to support political and gender conservatism. We accept that attachment theory has seen use to these ends and consider recent deployments of attachment theory as justification for a minimal State within conservative political discourse in the UK since 2009. However, we contest that attachment is reducible to its discursive …

    Open Access•Carol George, Judith Solomon•ARTICLE•Infant Mental Health Journal•1996•Cited by: 7•References: 21

According to attachment theory, the child's attachment behavioral system is complemented by a reciprocal caregiving system in the parent. Going beyond current descriptions of caregiving as a set of discrete parental behaviors and attitudes that are related to attachment, we have sought to describe caregiving as a behavioral system that is organized in its own right. Examination interviews of 32 mothers of 6-year-old children, we found a significa…

Thirty-two mothers of 6-year-old children were observed in the home and subsequently interviewed regarding experiential and affective dimensions of parenting. Interviews were examined in order to assess the quality of the mother's thinking regarding two dimensions of caregiving (secure base, competence) which we hy…

  • Defining the caregiving system: Toward a theory of caregiving

    Open Access•Judith Solomon, Carol George•ARTICLE•Infant Mental Health Journal•1996•References: 27

The purpose of this paper is to present a preliminary framework for conceptualizing the caregiving behavioral system. Following Bowlby (1982), we propose that caregiving is organized within a goal-corrected behavioral system that is reciprocal to attachment. The set-goal of the system is to keep dependent offspring close or safe; its adaptive function is protection of the young. The caregiving system is designed to provide changing levels and for…
