Automation, workers and union decline
This paper presents a study of the work of the institutional labor economist, Ben Seligman. Seligman presents an interesting case study of theory and practice because he spent part of his career working for unions. He formed his version of institutional economics before he went to work for those unions, but his work for them exposed him to the impact automation was having on workers and unions. Because his institutional economics included an appr…

Henry George's Influence on John Bates Clark
John Bates Clark's marginal productivity theory of income distribution has been portrayed as being derived from David Ricardo. This article traces the influence Henry George had on that theory in providing a standard for measuring labor's addition to aggregate output as comparable to what could be earned on no-rent land. Following George, Jobn Bates Clark extended that standard to include no-rent capital

The Du Pont Experiments in Scientific Management
In this article, Professor Stabile examines the experimentation with Frederick Taylor's principles of scientific management by managers at the E. I. du Pont de Nemours Powder Company. Despite their initial interest in efficiency, those managers quickly recognized that there was a direct relationship between efficiency and safety, an issue Taylor had not considered. When it was alleged that the efficiency methods had been a factor in two explosion…

Veblen and the Political Economy of the Engineer
Thorstein Veblen's case for a Technocracy, "The Engineers and the Price System," has long posed an enigma: Why would a thinker as radical as Veblen align himself with a group as conservative as engineers? But engineers themselves had developed a political economy with important points in common with Veblen's analysis. Starting from their positions as technological experts in corporations, engineers came to believe that business methods were not e…
