  • Global Burden of Cardiovascular Diseases and Risk Factors, 1990–2019

Open Access•Gregory A Roth, George A Mensah et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the American College…•2020

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), principally ischemic heart disease (IHD) and stroke, are the leading cause of global mortality and a major contributor to disability. This paper reviews the magnitude of total CVD burden, including 13 underlying causes of cardiovascular death and 9 related risk factors, using estimates from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2019. GBD, an ongoing multinational collaboration to provide comparable and consisten…

  • Global, Regional, and National Burden of Cardiovascular Diseases for 10 Causes, 1990 to 2015

Open Access•Gregory A Roth, Catherine Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the American College…•2017

BACKGROUND: The burden of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remains unclear in many regions of the world. OBJECTIVES: The GBD (Global Burden of Disease) 2015 study integrated data on disease incidence, prevalence, and mortality to produce consistent, up-to-date estimates for cardiovascular burden. METHODS: CVD mortality was estimated from vital registration and verbal autopsy data. CVD prevalence was estimated using modeling software and data from h…

  • A cross-sectional study of vascular risk factors in a rural South African population: Data from the Southern African Stroke Prevention Initiative (Saspi)

Open Access•Margaret Thorogood, Myles Connor et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2007

We found a high prevalence of hypertension, obesity in women, and a suggestion of subclinical atheroma despite relatively favourable cholesterol levels in a rural South African population. South Africa is facing the challenge of an emerging epidemic of vascular disease. Research to establish the social determinates of these risk factors and interventions to reduce both individual and population risk are required

  • High rates of ischaemic heart disease in Scotland are not explained by conventional risk factors

Richard Mitchell, Gerry Fowkes et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2005•Cited by: 4•References: 2

Study objectives: To (1) compare prevalence of socioeconomic, behavioural, and physiological ischaemic heart disease (IHD) risk factors in Scotland with a comparable nation (England) and (2) find out if their distribution explains Scotland’s comparatively higher IHD rate (1.62 (1.30, 2.02)). Design, setting, and participants: Cross sectional, individual level observational study with data on socioeconomic, behavioural, and physiological character…

  • Life Course Data Collection: Qualitative Interviewing using the Life Grid

    Open Access•Odette Parry, Carolyn Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Research Online•1999•Cited by: 17•References: 12

The life grid, has recently been acclaimed as a accurate method for collecting retrospective data from elderly respondents. Accounts of using this method, which are based upon quantitative studies, however, have not adequately captured the dynamics of grid interviewing. This is, we suggest, because it is much easier to describe technical aspects of a research method than it is to convey how that method works in practice. In this article we set ou…

Every year halfa million women die as a result of pregnancy-99% of them in developing countries. Most ofthe deaths are preventable, but the enormity of the task generates the kind ofcompassion fatigue induced by Oxfam mailshots. We forget that only 60 years ago maternal mortality in Britain was as high as it is today in Central Africa, where one in every 200 pregnant women dies. Our rate was reduced to 1 in 10 000 not by a social revolution but by t…

This report describes referral patterns from general practices to specialist outpatient clinics in the Oxford region. The results are based on information provided by 36 general practices on over 45 000 referrals made over a period of 10 months during 1990-1991
