    Open Access•Marjorie Halpin, Meghan Gosse et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 24

How do online communities impact men's health? How does hegemonic masculinity harm men's health? In this paper, we analyse an online looksmaxxing community that receives 6 million unique visitors per month and is aimed at men seeking to improve their appearance. We qualitatively analysed 8072 discussion board comments in total. Our findings first demonstrate how users apply a hegemonic masculine gaze as they critique men's bodies (e.g., facial as…

  • Stochastic Gender-Based Violence: How Incels Justify and Encourage Sexualized Violence Against Women

    Open Access•Meghan Gosse, Marjorie Halpin et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2024•Cited by: 4•References: 6

This study examines how involuntarily celibate (“incels”) men justify gender-based and sexualized violence against women. Based on an analysis of 22,060 discussion board comments, we argue that: (1) incel justifications of sexualized violence are tied to their perception of gender relations, (2) incels justify sexual assault as a form of revenge for their incel status, and (3) incels misuse science to argue that women enjoy sexual assault. Adapti…

  • Planning for a healthy baby and a healthy pregnancy: A critical analysis of Canadian clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of opioid dependence during pregnancy

    Open Access•F Martins, F Martin et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2024•References: 9

As opioid fatalities rise in North America, the need to improve the supports available to those who are dependent on opioids and pregnant has become more urgent. This paper discusses the social organisation of drug treatment supports for those who are pregnant, using Canadian clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) as a case study. Pregnant patients are a priority population for MMT, both in Canada and intern…

  • Men who hate women: The misogyny of involuntarily celibate men

    Open Access•Marjorie Halpin, Norann Richard et al.•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2023•Cited by: 14•References: 6

This article uses computational data and social science theories to analyze the misogynistic discourse of the involuntary celibate (“incel”) community. We analyzed every comment ( N = 3,686,110) produced over 42 months on a popular incel discussion board and found that nearly all active participants use misogynistic terms. Participants used misogynistic terms nearly one million times and at a rate 2.4 times greater than their use of neutral terms…

  • What affects perceptions of neighbourhood change

    Open Access•Meghan Gosse, Hector Ramos et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Geographies /…•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 30

Key Messages Residents of Halifax do not perceive economic or social and cultural changes in their neighbourhoods; however, they do perceive those to the built environment. When residents of Halifax perceive changes in their neighbourhoods, they tend to be positive about them. Tabular and regression analysis show that sense of belonging increases positive perceptions of neighbourhood change and older age decreases positive views of change
