  • Using Simulated Training Data to Locate Archaeological Sites with Machine Learning

Open Access•Katherine Peck, Claudine Gravel-Miguel et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Archaeological Practice•2026

Archaeologists have demonstrated the value of deep learning models for detecting archaeological objects in lidar data. As landscape-level projects become the norm, archaeological data derived from deep learning predictions can be integrated into these initiatives through coupled natural-cultural landscapes planning. However, the paucity of archaeological training datasets limits the application of deep learning models to relatively common and wel…

  • Semantic Segmentation of Archaeological Features on Public Lands

    Open Access•Claudine Gravel-Miguel, Grant Snitker et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Archaeological Practice•2025•References: 12

The logistics, costs, and capacity needed to complete extensive archaeological pedestrian surveys to inventory cultural resources present challenges to public land managers. To address these issues, we developed a workflow combining lidar-derived imagery and deep learning (DL) models tailored for cultural resource management (CRM) programs on public lands. It combines Python scripts that fine-tune models to recognize archaeological features in li…

  • Agent-based least-cost path analysis and the diffusion of Cantabrian Lower Magdalenian engraved scapulae

    Claudine Gravel-Miguel, Colin D Wren•PREPRINT•2018

At the root of numerous archaeological research projects is a need to understand how mobility impacted the lives of our ancestors. Recent technological advances have made it easy for archaeologists to rely on Geographic Information Systems’ least-cost path tools to identify the single easiest path to move between two points set in a realistically rugged landscape; however, least-cost path tools work on the assumption that the whole world is perfe…

  • The Breaking of Ochred Pebble Tools as Part of Funerary Ritual in the Arene Candide Epigravettian Cemetery

    Open Access•Claudine Gravel-Miguel, J Riel-Salvatore et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Archaeological Journal•2017•Cited by: 10

We present the analysis of 29 human-transported limestone pebbles found during recent excavations (2009–11) in the Final Epigravettian levels at the Caverna delle Arene Candide, Italy. All pebbles are oblong, most bear traces of red ochre and many appear intentionally broken. Macroscopic analyses demonstrate morphological similarity with pebbles used as grave goods in the Final Epigravettian necropolis excavated at the site in the 1940s. Mediterr…
