    Open Access•Katharina Sa, Sarah-Christin Aga•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology of…•2026•References: 36

This article examines how students at academic elite upper-secondary schools in Norway make sense of inequality, privilege, and school admission policy.

The extent to which the gender cleavage becomes manifest is related to the overall cleavage structure. The gender cleavage has been comparatively more salient in Europe’s Protestant North than in other Western countries. Incorporating gender conflicts into the Rokkanian framew…

  • Struggling for girls’ education

    Open Access•Katharina Sa, Katharina Sass•ARTICLE•Paedagogica Historica•2022

This paper explores how girls’ education developed in Norway and Prussia (and later North Rhine-Westphalia, NRW) during the first and second wave of women’s political mobilisation. It analyses how organisations and activists of the women’s movement were included in different cross-interest coalitions in education politics. The cases are interpreted in light of Rokkanian cleavage theory. In Germany, the women’s movement was split along class lines…

  • Cleavage structures and school politics

    Open Access•Katharina Sa, Katharina Sass•ARTICLE•History of Education•2020

This paper explores comparatively and historically why Nordic and Continental welfare and education regimes differ in the degree of comprehensiveness of their primary and lower secondary school systems. It analyses how school reforms, reform attempts and coalitions in the post-war decades were shaped by different cleavage structures in Norway and the German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. While the class cleavage was most dominant in sch…
