Appropriate and Appropriated Sites for Elephants
Through a case study of the museum career of a mounted specimen of African elephant, the nature of “museum objects” and sites in which they engage in the construction of meaning are examined. The paper tracks a series of representations through a museum and explores how this representative of the species was appropriated, rematerialized, represented and re-presented in a variety of media to convey new meanings. It analyzes the processes of transl…
Recycled objects
Through a case study approach those acts of assembling, juxtaposing and exhibiting collections of objects, which constitute the western museum, are analysed as artistic processes which produce the museum as a form of ‘public art’. The paper takes as its fulcrum L’Ange, a contemporary artwork formed from recycled materials by the Fon artist Gérard Quenum. It examines how this contemporary work is deployed in National Museums Scotland to recycle hi…
George Wilson's Map of Technology
An intriguing symbol adorns the grave, in Edinburgh's Old Calton Burial Ground, of George Wilson (1818–1859), Britain's first Professor of Technology. Wilson himself had devised the symbol as an emblem for the Industrial Museum of Scotland of which he was Director. In his professorial role he defined and delineated the ‘territorial features’ and ‘intellectual architecture’ of the novel academic discipline of technology. As the founding-Director o…
Reconstructed visions
The shifting location of one institution within a knowledge-space that is itself dynamic is examined through a brief case-study of one of the constituent museums which, in 1985, became a part of the then newly established National Museums of Scotland. Through examination of the declared intentions of successive directors over the 151 year history of the institution successively known as the Industrial Museum of Scotland, the Edinburgh Museum of S…

One of a bye-gone time
Richard Parnell established himself as an authority on both fishes and grasses. Although he published only on British species, he collected more widely and had plans for a work on exotic material. However, in 1845 he seems abruptly to have abandoned publishing the results of his scientific collecting, although he continued to collect. His collections of British and exotic fishes are in the National Museums of Scotland, Edinburgh and The Natural H…

Gas Lighting in British Museums and Galleries, with Particular Reference to the Edinburgh Museum of Science and Art
Who Runs the Museum? Curatorial Conflict in a National Collection
Excavations at Pierowall Quarry, Westray, Orkney
Complex multi-period site. Spiral-decorated stones, large circular chambered tomb of mid-3rd millennium, demolished for small structure (Grooved Ware) then abandoned until large Iron Age round house built over cairn. Critical examination of many recent Orkney publications in the light of this evidence, and some new approaches suggested. 14C dates and environmental evidence
