Richard Parnell established himself as an authority on both fishes and grasses. Although he published only on British species, he collected more widely and had plans for a work on exotic material. However, in 1845 he seems abruptly to have abandoned publishing the results of his scientific collecting, although he continued to collect. His collections of British and exotic fishes are in the National Museums of Scotland, Edinburgh and The Natural History Museum, London whilst his herbaria are widely distributed in British collections. This paper surveys Parnell's contributions to ichthyology and reviews his collections.
