Interference and Impact of Dysmenorrhea on the Life of Spanish Nursing Students
Dysmenorrhea is a cause of absenteeism in universities which, in the context of nursing studies, may affect mandatory attendance. Moreover, presenteeism is associated with medication errors, patient falls, and a reduced quality of patient care. This study sought to identify the degree of interference of dysmenorrhea on daily life and its impact on academic performance among Spanish nursing students, and to explore the reasons for presenteeism. A …
The Evolution of Gender Segregation over the Life Course
We propose a measure of gender segregation over the life course that includes differences between women and men in occupational allocation, degree of time involvement in paid work, and their participation in different forms of economic activity and inactivity, such as paid work, homemaking, and retirement. We pool 21 Labour Force Surveys for the United Kingdom to measure, compare, and add up these various forms of segregation-occupational, time-r…
The joint effect of ethnicity and gender on occupational segregation. An approach based on the Mutual Information Index
Entropy-Based Segregation Indices
Recent research has shown that two entropy-based segregation indices possess an appealing mixture of basic and subsidiary but useful properties. It would appear that the only fundamental difference between the mutual information or M index, and the entropy information or H index, is that the second is a normalized version of the first. This paper introduces another normalized index in that family, the H* index, which captures segregation as the t…

The Estimation of Food Expenditures From Household Budget Data in the Presence of Bulk Purchases
The aim of this article is the estimation of annual food expenditures with limited information about bulk purchases with data from a Spanish household-budget survey for 1990—1991. Three alternatives are compared. The first, currently used for official purposes, does not use all the information. The second uses all the available information in a rough way. The third assumes a formal model for the unknown frequency of purchases. The three alternati…
The Influence of Household Composition on Household Expenditure Patterns: Theory and Spanish Evidence
A concept of demographic separability is proposed that formalizes t he notion that there are groups of goods (adult goods) that have little or no relationship to specific classes of household demographics (the numbers or ages of children). That there exist adult goods demographically separable from children is a necessary, but not sufficient, condition for the validity of Erwin Rothbarth's method for measuring child costs. The authors propose two…
Robust Methods of Building Regression Models—An Application to thè Housing Sector
This article studies robustification strategies for the linear model in the presence of outliers. The advantages of an internal analysis of the robustness of least squares for a given sample are pointed out. The application of this methodology is illustrated by building an explicit model of the determinants of rental housing values in the Madrid Metropolitan Area
