Longitudinal patterns of active leisure among South African youth: Gender differences and associations with health risk behaviours
This study identified adolescents' patterns of active leisure participation over two years and five waves of data and how those patterns were related to substance use and sexual activity. Participants included 3581 primarily Colored (mixed race) South African adolescents. Latent class analysis was utilized to determine patterns of active leisure patterns and multinomial logistic regression was used to examine the relationships between the pattern…
Trends in HIV risk behaviour of incoming first-year students at a South African university: 2007-2012
The aim of the research on which this article is based was to understand the behavioural changes of the target student population over time to ensure that future prevention programmes are more effective in changing behaviour. This study reports on quantitative data collected at the University of the Western Cape over a six-year period between 2007 and 2012. All the students attending the orientation sessions and who were willing to complete the a…
Correlates of sexual activity versus non-activity of incoming first-year students at a South African university
In order to contribute to the design of more effective programmes to curb the spread of HIV at tertiary institutions, this study compares the profile of students who are sexually active versus those who are not yet sexually active when entering university. The study was conducted among three cohorts of first-year university students at the University of the Western Cape from 2007 to 2009. A range of correlates of sexual activity versus non-activi…
Was Bob Seger Right? Relation Between Boredom in Leisure and [Risky] Sex
This article examines the association between boredom in leisure and risky sexual behaviors among South African youth (N = 1695) using longitudinal data. We hypothesized that youth who were higher on boredom in leisure at the end of ninth grade would be more likely to report engaging in risky sexual behaviors at the beginning of tenth grade. Chi-square results indicate youth, especially male youth who experience high levels of leisure boredom in …
Linking Life Skills and Norms With Adolescent Substance Use and Delinquency in South Africa
We examined factors targeted in two popular prevention approaches with adolescent drug use and delinquency in South Africa. We hypothesized adolescent life skills to be inversely related, and perceived norms to be directly related to later drug use and delinquency. Multiple regression and a relative weights approach were conducted for each outcome using a sample of 714 South African adolescents ages 15 to 19 years ( M = 15.8 years, 57% female). P…
Narratives of transactional sex on a university campus
Given the imperatives of HIV and gender equality, South African researchers have foregrounded transactional sex as a common practice that contributes to unsafe and inequitable sexual practices. This paper presents findings from a qualitative study with a group of students at a South African university, drawing on narratives that speak to the dynamics of reportedly widespread transactional sex on campus. Since many of these relationships are inscr…

When a 22-year-old University of the Western Cape (UWC) female student was stabbed to death by her boyfriend (another \nstudent) in her room in the university residence on 25 August 2008, the entire campus was left reeling. Bringing the stark reality \nof gender-based violence (GBV) so close to home, the tragedy was a powerful reminder of the limits of more than a decade \nof legislative change, concerted activism, education, consciousness-raisin…
Health Wise South Africa: Development of a Life Skills Curriculum for Young Adults
The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of an international collaborative effort that aims to reduce risky behavior (e.g., substance use, risky sexual behavior) that leads to outcomes such as HIV/AIDs, pregnancy, and addictions among a sample of South African youth. Because many of these risky behaviors occur in free time, a major part of the effort was leisure education to promote positive use of free time. The program described…
