The Afterlife of The Imperial and the National in Habsburg Central Europe
Pieter M. Judson questions the validity of modern debates regarding the legacy of empires by challenging the traditional dichotomy between "empire" and "nation-state," particularly in the context of post-Habsburg Central Europe. He argues that the collapse of the Habsburg Empire was driven not so much by nationalist uprisings and secessionism, but rather by the empire's internal failures to provide for its subjects amidst wartime crises. Conseque…
Prisons of peoples? Empire, nation and conflict management in Habsburg Central Europe, 1848–1925
Vladimir Putin’s legitimation of Russia’s brutal war of aggression against Ukraine raises questions about traditional understandings of nation and empire. Should we contrast the two in terms of values and practices? In this case, Putin uses both nationalist and Imperialist rhetoric to justify his actions. My essay questions how we understand nation and empire using the example of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. How did this empire develop laws, inst…
Being a Historian of Central Europe
The main goal of Historical Studies on Central Europe is to provide an interdisciplin- \nary and international platform for disseminating new findings on Central Europe \nand enhancing the dialog on it. In this spirit, the editors have decided to launch a \nseries asking prominent scholars of the region: their personal motivations for choos- \ning Central Europe as their field; their view on central questions of methodology, \ntrends, and definit…
A “Deák School of History”
This article argues that—fully unintentionally—István Deák founded a distinctive school of history among the students he mentored. The school took inspiration from Deák’s captivating style, clear argumentation, and empathetic moral capacity. In particular, however, Deák and his students sought explanations for social, cultural, and political phenomena in East Central Europe outside the constricting boundaries of the nationalism that dominated thi…
Rethinking Nationalism
This forum, curated by Michael Goebel (Freie Univ. Berlin), brings together twelve historians who draw on their own areas of specialization to rethink how we conceptualize the history of nationalism in our present moment of reactivated and often militant nationalist rhetoric

Debate on Pieter M. Judson’s The Habsburg Empire
Since its publication, Pieter M. Judson’s history of the Habsburg Empire: A New History has sparked discussion and debate as a result of its novel reframing of the relationship between nationalism and empire in the Central European polity. Judson offers a new narrative of a vibrant and adaptive state that had the ability to balance empire and nationality, and thus was not doomed to fail, as has been one of the well-worn interpretations of the emp…
Habsburg
"Unser Reich": So nannten Menschen unterschiedlicher Sprachen und Religionen von Südtirol über Mähren bis Galizien und Transsilvanien das Habsburgerreich. Pieter Judson erzählt in seiner meisterhaften Gesamtdarstellung die Geschichte der Donaumonarchie und der Österreichisch- Ungarischen Doppelmonarchie ganz neu und revidiert gründlich das vertraute Bild vom verknöcherten !Vielvölkerreich"
An Imperial Dynamo? CEH Forum on Pieter Judson's The Habsburg Empire
Rare is the book that helps to shift the paradigm upon which an entire field rests. Such a book is Pieter Judson's The Habsburg Empire: A New History . Building on insights and critical approaches that have been emerging and developing for the last twenty to thirty years, Judson offers a fresh framework—a new scaffolding for interpreting the Austrian Habsburg monarchy, especially since the early eighteenth century

Different Paths to the Nation. Regional and National Identities in Central Europe and Italy, 1830-1870
Historians of central European nationalism in the nineteenth and twentieth century owe Laurence Cole a debt of gratitude for making this fine collection of essays available to an English-speaking audience. Not only is his own distinctive vision clearly apparent in the range of questions addressed by the authors, but Cole also had a hand in translating into English, from the original German or Italian, five of the eleven articles in the volume. Th…
Exclusive Revolutionaries
Exclusive Revolutionaries traces the development of German liberal and later nationalist political culture in imperial Austria from the revolutions of 1848 to the outbreak of World War I. Drawing on archival research from several regions of the former Habsburg Monarchy, Pieter M. Judson provides a clear, chronological political narrative that demonstrates the continuing influence of liberal ideas and values well after the defeat of liberal politi…
