  • Oyster Coverage: Chiastic News as a Reflection of Local Expertise and Economic Concerns

    Open Access•Toby A Ten Eyck, Forrest A Deseran•ARTICLE•Sociological Research Online•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 12

The media, it is argued, are agents of legitimation - for themselves as well as others. Issues and social actors become recognized as important when they appear within the limelight of the news, and reporters are relied upon to correctly choose among the myriads of issues and actors vying for their attention. What happens, though, when an economically important cultural icon becomes a health threat? This is the situation facing news organizations…

  • Households, Local Labor Markets, and Youth Labor Force Participation

    Open Access•Diane C Keithly, Diane Keithly et al.•ARTICLE•Youth & Society•1995•Cited by: 9•References: 15

Drawing on studies dealing with the relationship between family and work, the authors develop a model of youth labor force participation incorporating household, local economic, and individual variables. Data are from the 1980 Public Use Microdata Sample D (PUMS-D) for 16-to 18-year-old males and females living with their parents. The findings suggest that household structural characteristics and family resources have a significant effect on yout…

  • Teenagers in the U.S. Labor Force: Local Labor Markets, Race, and Family 1

    Open Access•Forrest A Deseran, Diane Keithly•ARTICLE•Rural Sociology•1994•References: 18

Drawing on theories of family organization and labor‐market structures, it is argued that teenagers represent a useful target population for research on the effects of race, household characteristics, and local labor markets on labor‐force participation. Toward this end, predictive models of labor‐force participation are applied to a sample of all white and black 16‐ to 18‐year‐olds living at home in nonmetropolitan and metropolitan labor‐market …

  • Women's off-farm work and gender stratification

  • Off-farm Employment and Social Networks of Louisiana Farm Couples

    Open Access•Forrest A Deseran•ARTICLE•Sociologia Ruralis•1985•Cited by: 3•References: 10

The growing reliance on off-farm employment in industrialized societies has become a topic of considerable research interest. Although attention has been paid to the impact of multiple job holding on the economic well-being and the internal organization of farm families, there is a lack of discussion on how this may affect external social relations among these families. Examining farm couples in Louisiana, this paper treats their work-role status…

  • Trust and Symbolic Exchange

    David F Haas, Forrest A Deseran•ARTICLE•Social Psychology Quarterly•1981•Cited by: 29•References: 10

This paper analyzes some of the ways that actors try to establish their trustworthiness in interaction. It is argued that they do so through a type of social exchange in which the principal importance of the goods exchanged lies not in their utilitarian value to those who receive them but in their significance as gestures that communicate the intentions of the actors making them. This type of social exchange is called symbolic exchange. A vocabul…

  • Appearance, Role-Taking, and Reactions to Deviance: Some Experimental Findings

    Forrest A Deseran, Chang-Soo Chung•ARTICLE•Social Psychology Quarterly•1979

It is argued that sociological understanding of audience reactions to rule-breaking behaviors can be enhanced by incorporating symbolic interactionist notions of identity and role-taking. The importance of distinguishing between identity of and identification with actors is stressed in the context of intervening mediating processes between audience perceptions of and reactions to rule-breaking behaviors. Findings from an experiment designed to ex…
