It is argued that sociological understanding of audience reactions to rule-breaking behaviors can be enhanced by incorporating symbolic interactionist notions of identity and role-taking. The importance of distinguishing between identity of and identification with actors is stressed in the context of intervening mediating processes between audience perceptions of and reactions to rule-breaking behaviors. Findings from an experiment designed to explore the effects of physical appearance (hippie'' vs. straight'') and behavior (shoplifting vs. nonshoplifting) on both audience imputations of personal dispositional qualities to the actor and the imagined impact of audience reactions on the actor support the authors' argument. Implications of these findings are discussed relative to the social construction of deviance
