    Open Access•Mark Aguiar, Miguel Aguiar•ARTICLE•e-Spania•2025

  • Framing Kinship: The Case of Portuguese Entails (Morgadios and Capelas), 14th-17th Centuries

    Open Access•Mark Aguiar•ARTICLE•Studia Historica Historia Moderna•2025•References: 34

This article focuses on the kinship relationships framed by entails in Portugal, between the 14th and 17th centuries. Why did the founders decide to establish entails, and how did they think this solution would protect their kinship groups? What kind of organisation did they imagine and intend to implement for future relatives? How did they try to constrain the behaviour of their relatives and their relationships? Did entails shape a type of spec…

  • Dominance within the ecclesia: The case of late medieval Portugal

    Open Access•Mark Aguiar•ARTICLE•Revista de História•2024

This article aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of a theoretical perspective. It argues that, in medieval society, the ecclesia, in its threefold sense (the community of the faithful, ecclesiastical hierarchies, and cult buildings) played a determinant role in organising different interlocked social relations. Thus, this role is critical to understanding the reproduction of dominant groups, whose organisation must be conceived through the eccl…

    Open Access•Mark Aguiar, Miguel Aguiar•ARTICLE•Medievalista online•2022

    Open Access•Mark Aguiar•ARTICLE•Cuadernos de Estudios Gallegos•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 11

  • Self-Fulfilling Debt Crises, Revisited

Mark Aguiar, Satyajit Chatterjee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Lack of commitment at the time of auction to repayment of imminently maturing debt can generate a run on debt and immediate default. We show that the same lack of commitment leads to other possible self-fulfilling crises, including issuance of more debt at depressed prices, or a “sudden stop” (forced austerity) in which debt issuance is sharply curtailed. Both outcomes stem from the government's incentive to eliminate uncertainty about imminent p…

  • Leisure Luxuries and the Labor Supply of Young Men

Mark Aguiar, Mark Bils et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2020•Cited by: 7•References: 1

We propose a methodology exploiting time diary data and “leisure Engel curves” to infer quality changes across leisure activities and measure the effects on the marginal return to leisure. We study leisure returns for men aged 21–30, who have shifted leisure toward video gaming and recreational computing and have had larger market work hour declines than older men or women since 2004. We show that recreational computing is distinctly a leisure lu…

  • Has Consumption Inequality Mirrored Income Inequality?

Mark Aguiar, Mark Bils•ARTICLE•American Economic Review•2015

We revisit to what extent the increase in income inequality since 1980 was mirrored by consumption inequality. We do so by constructing an alternative measure of consumption expenditure using a demand system to correct for systematic measurement error in the Consumer Expenditure Survey. Our estimation exploits the relative expenditure of high- and low-income households on luxuries versus necessities. This double differencing corrects for measurem…

  • Fazer cavaleiros»: As cerimónias de investidura cavaleiresca no Portugal medieval (séculos XII-XV)

  • Time Use During the Great Recession

Mark Aguiar, Erik Hurst et al.•ARTICLE•American Economic Review•2013

Using data from the American Time Use Survey between 2003 and 2010, we document that home production absorbs roughly 30 percent of foregone market work hours at business cycle frequencies. Leisure absorbs roughly 50 percent of foregone market work hours, with sleeping and television watching accounting for most of this increase. We document significant increases in time spent on shopping, child care, education, and health. Job search absorbs betw…

  • Deconstructing Life Cycle Expenditure

Mark Aguiar, Erik Hurst•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2013•Cited by: 10•References: 2

In this paper we revisit two well-known facts regarding lifecycle expenditures. The first is the familiar "hump" shaped lifecycle profile of nondurable expenditures. We document that the behavior of total nondurables masks surprising heterogeneity in the lifecycle profile of individual sub-components. We find, for example, that while food expenditures decline after middle age, expenditures on entertainment continue to increase throughout the life…

  • Measuring Trends in Leisure: The Allocation of Time Over Five Decades

Mark Aguiar, Erik Hurst•ARTICLE•The Quarterly Journal of Economics•2007

In this paper, we use five decades of time-use surveys to document trends in the allocation of time within the United States. We find that a dramatic increase in leisure time lies behind the relatively stable number of market hours worked between 1965 and 2003. Specifically, using a variety of definitions for leisure, we show that leisure for men increased by roughly six to nine hours per week (driven by a decline in market work hours) and for wo…

  • Life-Cycle Prices and Production

Mark Aguiar, Erik Hurst•ARTICLE•American Economic Review•2007

We use scanner data and time diaries to document how households substitute time for money through shopping and home production. We document substantial heterogeneity in prices paid for identical goods for the same area and time, with older households shopping the most and paying the lowest prices. Doubling shopping frequency lowers a good's price by 7 to 10 percent. We estimate the shopper's price of time and use this series to estimate an elasti…

  • Emerging Market Business Cycles: The Cycle Is the Trend

Mark Aguiar, Gita Gopinath•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2007•Cited by: 38•References: 1

Emerging market business cycles exhibit strongly countercyclical current accounts, consumption volatility that exceeds income volatility, and “sudden stops†in capital inflows. These features contrast with developed small open economies. Nevertheless, we show that a standard model characterizes both types of markets. Motivated by the frequent policy regime switches observed in emerging markets, our premise is that these economies are subject to su…

  • Fire-Sale Foreign Direct Investment and Liquidity Crises

Mark Aguiar, Gita Gopinath•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2005

In placing capital market imperfections at the center of emerging market crises, the theoretical literature has associated a liquidity crisis with low foreign investment and the exit of investors from the crisis economy. However, a liquidity crisis is equally consistent with an inflow of foreign capital in the form of mergers and acquisitions (M&A). To support this hypothesis, we use a firm-level data set to show that foreign acquisitions increas…

  • Consumption versus Expenditure

Mark Aguiar, Erik Hurst•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2005•Cited by: 58•References: 3

Previous authors have documented a dramatic decline in food expenditures at the time of retirement. We show that this is matched by an equally dramatic rise in time spent shopping for and preparing meals. Using a novel data set that collects detailed food diaries for a large cross section of U.S. households, we show that neither the quality nor the quantity of food intake deteriorates with retirement status. We also show that unemployed household…
