  • From Injustice to Solidarity

    Open Access•Lynn Walter, Lisa Walter•ARTICLE•Women & Politics•2026

While prior research links discrimination experiences to higher levels of political engagement among women, it remains unclear whether such engagement extends beyond in-group advocacy and how the nature of discriminatory experiences relates to this association. Drawing on survey data from Germany (N ≈ 1,800), this study examines how gender-based discrimination is associated with political engagement across four issue areas: women’s rights, anti-r…

  • Armed conflict as a threat to social cohesion

    Open Access•Sabrina Jasmin Mayer, J Dollmann et al.•ARTICLE•Research & Politics•2024•References: 7

This study investigates the short- and long-term consequences of armed conflict and displacement on social cohesion among citizens within attacked nations, using Ukraine and Bosnia and Herzegovina as case studies. Through a pre-registered vignette study in Ukraine (December 2022; N = 1,623), we reveal a significant difference in social cohesion between those who stayed in the country during the war and those who left. This difference intensified …

  • Feminist Anthropology

    Open Access•Lynn Walter•ARTICLE•Gender & Society•1995•Cited by: 9•References: 34

In this article, the author argues that feminist anthropology as a field of study should pose questions about how differential power is constituted as gender differences. Addressing these questions calls for an approach to the study of gender and power that articulates the relationship between structure and agency. Such an approach is one that analyzes the practice of gender over time from intersubjective, political perspectives. Last, the author…

  • The Embodiment of Ugliness and the Logic of Love

    Open Access•Lynn Walter, Lynn M Walter•ARTICLE•Feminist Review•1990•Cited by: 2•References: 2

oppositions themselves, they have a particular immediacy in our time, an immediacy which can be attributed, in dialectical logic, to a reaction against structuralism, politically and intellectually. (Ortner, 1984) The sense that we are presently at the end of something, as expressed in the terms 'postindustrial' and 'postmodern', is a sign of loss of confidence in the structures of the state, the political party, the labour union, and the establi…

  • Who are they? When is then

Lynn Walter, Lynn E Walter•ARTICLE•Journal of Comparative Family…•1989•Cited by: 2

Examining selected histories of the Western family, this study analyzes problems associated with using an explicit or implied contrastive model of the past and present family. It is argued that so great is the power of this model to make order and sense and so basic is it to one understanding of society, that it is adopted even by some who profess to reject it. However this contrastive model is labelled - traditional/modem, pre-modem, pre-industr…

  • Power and Solidarity

    V Tellis-Nayak, Karen Tranberg Hansen et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1983•Cited by: 7•References: 2

This study investigates a role-specific vertical solidarity in South India, where urban Christian households employ rural Christians as domestics. The mistress-servant bond is characterized by the paradoxical features of subordination and devotion, unconditionality and instrumentality, sentiment and social distance. Their bond may appear to be dyadic, but in fact it implies a network of reciprocities among multiple social actors: the families of …

  • Social strategies and the fiesta complex In an Otavaleño community

    Open Access•Lynn Walter•ARTICLE•American Ethnologist•1981•Cited by: 16•References: 11

The relationship between family and cargo festivals is analyzed in the context of village interaction patterns in Ahuango, an Otavaleño Indian community in northern highland Ecuador. In Ahuango, dyadic relationships of trust and continuity are established, reaffirmed, and enacted in the context of family festivals. Individuals with relatively large land-holdings tend also to maintain more of these ties (i.e., to have larger "alliances") than othe…
