Examining selected histories of the Western family, this study analyzes problems associated with using an explicit or implied contrastive model of the past and present family. It is argued that so great is the power of this model to make order and sense and so basic is it to one understanding of society, that it is adopted even by some who profess to reject it. However this contrastive model is labelled - traditional/modem, pre-modem, pre-industrial/industrial - no fundamental challenge to it can be posed by asking, in various ways, "When and how did modem society begin?": Finally, three histories which do not use the contrastive model are examined to demonstrate both the power of the model and some alternatives to it
