    Open Access•Mel Monier•ARTICLE•Porn Studies•2026

Dark romance is a subgenre of romance characterized by ‘dark’ and ‘mature’ content, with common tropes including morally grey anti-heroes, mafia, motorcycle gangs, stalking, arranged marriages, and kidnapping. Dark romance also includes darker erotic content including BDSM, kink, and ‘taboo’ sexual desires. As a result, the sexual relationships between characters range from fully consensual to non-consensual or rape. This article explores how dar…

  • The History of Codex Alexandrinus: New Evidence from Arabic Paratexts

    Open Access•Mel Monier•ARTICLE•Novum Testamentum•2025

This article re-examines Codex Alexandrinus’s history, providing new paratextual evidence that supports an Alexandrian provenance, maintained in Egypt until its 17th-century transfer to England via Constantinople. It challenges scholarship favouring Constantinople as the codex’s home until the 14th century. Analyses of endowment ( waqf ) statements reveal differences between Patriarch Athanasius’s waqf and codices from Constantinople. Moreover, A…

  • "Since the moment pictures could move, we had skin in the game": Black horror podcasters as fans, critics, and creators

Open Access•Mel Monier, Kristen Leer•ARTICLE•Transformative Works and Cultures•2024

Black horror is often investigated within film and television studies, but there is a lack of further inquiry into how Black horror exists within fandom, audience, and podcast studies. Upon completing nine in-depth qualitative interviews in our ongoing project on Black-identifying horror podcasters, we investigate how they centralize their racial identity while negotiating and participating in horror fandom and podcasting, as well as how they nav…

The History of the Arabic Diatessaron

  • Tatian and the Arabic Diatessaron: Mark’s Ending as a Case Study

Open Access•Mel Monier•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of the New…•2024

Written in late second-century Rome, Tatian’s Diatessaron is one of the earliest and most influential Gospel harmonies in history. The original text of the Diatessaron was lost, and its surviving translations suffered from alterations. However, the attention of scholarship has recently shifted toward revisiting the Arabic Diatessaron with the aim of gathering fresh evidence from its text. This study examines Mark 16 in the Arabic Diatessaron, con…

  • From the auction block to the Tinder swipe: Black women’s experiences with fetishization on dating apps

    Open Access•Jasmine Banks, Mel Monier et al.•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2024•Cited by: 5•References: 5

The digital has been celebrated for its objectivity and lack of bias, yet digital media scholars have addressed the ways that inequity is embedded in technology. What is often missing from this discourse is the voices of Black women. Drawing on interviews with 20 self-identified Black and African American women, aged 18–30, who have used dating apps in the preceding 6 months, we invited participants to share their experiences with online dating a…

    Open Access•Mel Monier•ARTICLE•Communication Culture and Critique•2023•Cited by: 4•References: 8

Tricia Hersey, founder of The Nap Ministry, uses rest as a “healing mechanism” and a form of resistance. With a vibrant social media following, the Nap Ministry builds upon a strong history of Black feminist activism that centers the lived experiences of Black women. According to Hersey, rest is personal and political, a fight against the commodification and exploitation of laboring Black folks from chattel slavery to contemporary grind and hustl…

  • Mark's Endings in Context: Paratexts and Codicological Remarks

    Open Access•Mel Monier•ARTICLE•Religions•2022•References: 20

This article addresses the problem of the perception of Mark's endings as expressed in its manuscript tradition. I will argue that, unlike the modern standardized image, manuscript evidence offers a complex phenomenon in which the endings were perceived in diverse ways that move across the threshold that separates a text from paratexts. Further, the manuscripts show an influence between the endings and their associated paratexts. I will show this…

  • Mark’s Ending in the Digital Age: Paratextual Evidence, New Findings and Transcription Challenges

Mel Monier•ARTICLE•Postscripts The Journal of Sacred…•2021

In approaching the classic problem of Mark’s ending, it has been assumed that there was no stone left unturned. However, the dawning of the digital age has proven otherwise. As part of the SNSF–funded project MARK16, I have studied the complex evidence of Mark 16’s textual transmission to understand the scribal textual decisions. This was followed by electronic transcription of the studied material as part of the digitization process. I will argu…
