This article employs self‐report delinquency data from a national probability sample of adolescents to describe the epidemiology and dynamics of female delinquency from 1976 to 1980. Both age and cohort effects are examined, utilizing incidence and prevalence data categorized by race, social class, and place of residence. Within years there are few consistent, significant differences in the incidence of delinquency by any of the demographic varia…

  • Reconciling Race and Class Differences in Self-Reported and Official Estimates of Delinquency

    Delbert S Elliott, Suzanne S Ageton•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1980•Cited by: 274•References: 2

This paper addresses the general question of whether or not the satisfactory resolution of the methodological criticisms of self-report research will result in greater consistency between self-reported and official data with respect to the race and class distributions of delinquent behavior. We review the specific methodological criticisms of self-report delinquency (SRD) research; discuss the use of a new SRD measure in a national youth study; c…

  • An Integrated Theoretical Perspective on Delinquent Behavior

Open Access•Delbert S Elliott, Suzanne S Ageton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Crime and…•1979

This paper presents an integrated theoretical model of the etiology of delin quent behavior. The proposed model expands and synthesizes strain, social- learning, and social control perspectives into a single explanatory paradigm which avoids the class bias inherent in traditional perspectives and takes into account multiple causal paths to sustained patterns of delinquent behavior. Major variables in the model include two types of social bonds (i…

  • The Effects of Legal Processing on Delinquent Orientations

    Suzanne S Ageton, Delbert S Elliott•ARTICLE•Social Problems•1974•Cited by: 25

Labelling theorists have long argued that deviant careers and commitments are developed in the process of interaction between individuals and social control agents. A critical issue in this process concerns the effect of official labelling on an individual's subsequent orientation toward delinquency. This study attempts to explicate this process by exploring a number of variables which may intervene in this interaction. Our findings indicate that…
