This article explores the potential of the men's movement to inform the education of men enrolled in single-sex colleges, and to engage men students in the study of gender and an exploration of masculinity. Short-Term Effects of Prosocial Television Viewing on Play of Preschool Boys and Girls
A field observational experiment was performed to assess the impact of prosocial television on the free play of preschool children over a 4-day period. Analysis of the data indicated that boys were significantly more aggressive than girls and that exposure to prosocial television had a strong short-term effect on both boys and girls in reducing three classes of aggressive behavior. A corresponding increase in prosocial behavior and rule obedience…
Social Factors in Acquisition of Bar Pressing by Rats
An experiment was performed to determine the effects of a response-sophisticated model on the acquisition of a novel operant response (bar press) in the rat. Results are consistent with Bandura's social learning theory and suggest that previous studies may have confounded acquisition with performance in attempting to demonstrate observational learning in species other than man
Attribution of Motivation in Same-Race and Different-Race Stimulus Persons
Dissonance and Desire for a Cigarette
Recent research has demonstrated that primary drives such as hunger, thirst, and pain can be affected by inductions of dissonance. The purpose of the present experiment was to determine whether an acquired drive, desire for a cigarette, could be similarly modified. 26 Ss were divided into two equal groups of heavy smokers. One group of Ss was paid $1.50 for 6 hr. of deprivation whereas the other group was not. It was hypothesized that highly diss…
