This study investigates the phenomenon of the 'ratchet style' among young women on Instagram, exploring how this aesthetic, originally associated with urban, working-class subcultures, has transcended its roots and been adopted by various social groups.

  • The measurement of the economic, social and environmental impact of Peer to Peer online platforms

Open Access•Ángel Gordo, Ángel Gordo López et al.•ARTICLE•Empiria Revista de metodología de…•2020

Over the last decade, the rise of peer-to-peer online markets has become a major sociocultural and economic phenomena and been described as a collaborative or sharing economy. However, understanding their impact has been mired in controversy and disagreement. Proponents of the sharing economy hail its potential to be a panacea for many of the world’s problems, but more critical perspectives point to research that undermines these claims. The rapi…

Open Access•Javier De Rivera, Ángel Gordo et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Innovation and…•2017•Cited by: 12•References: 22

Although still embryonic, collaborative consumption and the sharing economy have become social and economic phenomena in just a few short years, yet there is little consensus on how to define them. The current classificatory schema or typologies of platforms have some weaknesses. Sectoral classifications, technological functionality, and discursive modes of understanding sharing and collaborative economies all provide valuable insights, but when …

  • The [not so] new digital family

    Open Access•Ángel Gordo, Angel J Gordo López et al.•ARTICLE•Feminism & Psychology•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 2

The main question for consideration in this paper relates to the functional prerequisites for the construction of the so-called ‘digital family’ in the Spanish context. Taking inspiration from Burman’s (1994; 2008) work we start from two assumptions. Firstly, we assume that representations of children and families are important in terms of power and gender. This leads to our second assumption, that when considering representations of the family w…

  • Social Media in Conflict

Chris Hables Gray, Ángel Gordo•ARTICLE•Cultural Politics an International…•2014•Cited by: 2

There are important differences in how information technology is used in military and social-movement cultures. Militaries use social media in the Human Terrain model and security-police mode for quantifying and controlling social space, in order to meet low-intensity, counterinsurgency, and regime-maintenance goals (or for recruitment and public relations). For social-movement cultures, such as secular Egyptian revolutionaries, 15M (Los Indignad…
