Werner Sombart and the deep origins of creative destruction
Unequal health outcomes
India’s non-communicable disease burden has increased rapidly, but chronic conditions remain unevenly distributed across socioeconomic groups. This study examines wealth-related disparities in four major outcomes: anaemia, diabetes, thyroid disorder, and high blood pressure among women aged 15–49 years in six North Indian states: Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan. Using nationally representative data fro…
Spotting Portfolio Greenwashing in Environmental Funds
This paper examines greenwashing practices in environmental funds. We utilize a unique data set of US equity mutual fund holdings between 2012 and 2021 to calculate the funds’ carbon footprints. Using a difference-in-differences analysis, we find that, following their commitments to sustainability, environmental funds fail to reduce their carbon footprints relative to a matched group of conventional funds. We also find, using an event study, a si…
Economic activity and suicides
The relationship between economic activity and suicides has been the subject of much scrutiny, but the focus in the extant literature has been almost exclusively on estimating associations rather than causal effects. In this paper, using data from England and Wales between January 1, 1997 and December 31, 2017, we propose a plausible set of assumptions to estimate the causal impacts of well-known macroeconomic variables on the daily suicide rate.…
Education, social identity and self-employment over time
While the extant literature suggests that an individual’s occupational choice depends on the level of economic development, little is known about how the dynamics of education and social identity impact self-employment choice over time in a developing country setting. The pseudo-panel regression results presented here suggest that higher education decreases the likelihood of individuals’ choice of self-employment over time in India, but increases…
Brexit uncertainty and volatility persistence in tourism demand
Tourism has emerged as one of the leading components of aggregate economic growth in most developed economies, especially in the UK, where it is predicted to grow at an annual rate of 3.8% through 2025. Because tourism demand represents individuals’ choice between leisure and work, a persistence of negative shocks, such as Brexit uncertainty, can be detrimental to the growth of tourism via its impact on agents’ utility function of a directed cons…
