  • Enhancing public health intelligence workforce capacity and capability

Open Access•Janette Parr, Yi Fan Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic provided a stimulus to improve emergency response capabilities in the United Kingdom. Compared to healthcare workers, there is a paucity of research examining the experiences of public health staff involved in the response. During the pandemic, English local authorities (LAs) responded to limit virus spread and mitigate its impacts by providing public health intelligence (PHI). This article reports workforce-rel…

  • Improving partnerships to improve outcomes for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities

    Open Access•Natalie Tyldesley‐marshall, Natalie Tyldesley-Marshall et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2025

Background Effective collaboration between different services is recommended by government policy for children and young people (CYP) with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) across many countries. In the UK, despite significant shifts in policy towards partnership working, there remains a scarcity of scientific evidence on how this should be achieved. This mixed methods systematic review examined interventions leading to improved s…

  • Effective service provision and partnerships in service providers for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities

    Open Access•Natalie Tyldesley‐marshall, Natalie Tyldesley-Marshall et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2023

It is widely recognized that provision of services for children and young people (CYP) with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) are enhanced when services such as healthcare, social care, and education collaborate and interact effectively, rather than separately. In the UK, while there have been significant changes to policy and provision which support and improve collaboration, professionals responsible for implementing these chang…

  • Investigating informed choice in screening programmes

    Open Access•Natalie Tyldesley‐marshall, Natalie Tyldesley-Marshall et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

We conclude that organisations need to decide whether their overarching aim is ensuring high levels of uptake or maximising informed choice to participate in screening programmes. Consideration must then be given to all levels of development and distribution of information produced to reflect each organisation's aim. The comprehensibility of the DA must also be considered, as this may be reduced when informed choice is prioritised

  • The Extended Pillar Integration Process (ePIP)

Open Access•Julia Gauly, Arun Ulahannan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Mixed Methods Research•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 7

Mixed methods research requires data integration from multiple sources. Existing techniques are restricted to integrating a maximum of two data sources, do not provide step-by-step guidance or can be cumbersome where many data need to be integrated. We have solved these limitations through the development of the extended Pillar Integration Process (ePIP), a method which contributes to the field of mixed methods by being the first data integration…

  • Paragons, Mavericks and Innovators—A typology of orthopaedic surgeons' professional identities. A comparative case study of evidence‐based practice

    Open Access•Amy Grove, Catherine Pope et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2022•References: 49

Clinical guidelines, as vehicles for evidence‐based practice (EBP) attempt to standardize health‐care practice, reduce variation and increase quality. However, their use for surgery has been contested, and often resisted. This article examines professional responses to EBP in hip replacement surgery using data from case study observations and interviews in three English orthopaedic departments. A professional identity perspective is adopted to ex…

  • Knowledge mobilisation in orthopaedic surgery in England

    Amy Grove, Aileen Clarke et al.•ARTICLE•Evidence & Policy•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 16

Background: Healthcare policy encourages the use of scientific evidence in the delivery of healthcare services. However, the complexity of practice restricts the use of codified knowledge in clinical guidelines despite continued effort from policymakers to ensure their use in practice. This study adopts a knowledge mobilisation perspective to explore the multiple levels through which scientific evidence is enacted to generate variation in practic…

  • A qualitative exploration of evidence-based decision making in public health practice and policy

    Amy Grove, Tom Sanders et al.•ARTICLE•Evidence & Policy•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the perceived usefulness of a diabetes economic model as a potential tool for aiding evidence-based decision making in public health. Methods Fifteen interviews and two focus groups, with four participants in each, were conducted with health and management professionals working in one public health department in a local council. Data were analysed using inductive thematic analysis to generate four t…

  • Pillar Integration Process

Open Access•Rebecca Johnson, Amy Grove et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Mixed Methods Research•2017•Cited by: 27•References: 6

Despite an emphasis on integration in mixed methods research, there remain relatively few well-articulated integration techniques for use by researchers. We developed the Pillar Integration Process, a transparent and rigorous four-stage technique for integrating and presenting qualitative and quantitative findings in a joint display. The purpose of this article is to describe the technique and illustrate how it was developed and applied using via…
