The Science of Play, the Play of Science
Approaches to play and learning in early childhood education and care (ECEC) range from child-centered to academically focused pedagogies. These different perspectives shape how ECEC teachers support children’s learning in play-based contexts, reflecting a continuum in how child-initiated learning during play is encouraged. At one end is free play, initiated and directed by children, while the opposite end represents teacher-guided activities, of…
Feeling valued and adding value
Although young people are increasingly engaged as co-researchers, their perspectives on this role remain insufficiently explored. Framed by theoretical perspectives on mattering and empowerment, this study examines how mattering experienced as feeling valued and adding value, is perceived by young co-researchers with lived experience of social exclusion and by academic researchers within the SOBRU project Youth Panel. Drawing on data from dialogi…
I was the weird one down there’. The intersecting experiences of Norwegian international sport for development and peace volunteers
For more than two decades, Norway has been one of the leading actors in engaging international volunteers to sport for development and peace (SDP) organisations in the Global South. SDP is a priority area of Norwegian sports politics, mainly projected through the Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sports (NIF) where the international SDP volunteer (SDP-IV) scheme is central. Both local and international volunteers pla…
Discourses of resistance
Scholars have identified a need for more learner-centred pedagogical practices as one way to facilitate more inclusive learning in physical education (PE). In this regard teacher education plays an important part through the preparation of future teachers. Yet, disrupting pre-service teachers' prior values or beliefs to transform PE, has proven difficult. Grounded in critical pedagogical perspectives and discursive psychology, the current study e…
Adult minority women's experiences of belonging through sport and recreational activities
This paper explores how female participants with diverse cultural backgrounds construct experiences of belonging through participation in a community sport and recreation programme in Norway. The paper builds on data from two focus groups with 11 female participants who regularly followed programme activities and on direct observation field notes. In the presentation of the results, four composite characters are developed to ensure participants' …
Ethics in Categorizing Ethnicity and Disability in Research with Children
The use of categories is a contested subject in social sciences. The use of social categories allows researchers to explore similarities, differences, and inequalities between groups of people. However, by using social categories, researchers run the risk of essentializing differences. The aim of this article is to problematize the procedural and relational ethics of using categories in research with children. Based on two research projects study…
Parental satisfaction with inclusion in physical education
Knowledge is scarce on parental satisfaction with the inclusion of children with disabilities in physical education (PE). This study explored how parents’ satisfaction with inclusion in PE was associated with parental and child interpersonal and intrapersonal characteristics. Seventy-two parents of children with disabilities participated in the survey-based study. The results of the ordinary least square regression (OLS) and quantile regression (…
Physical education-related home–school collaboration
In this hermeneutic phenomenological study, we describe the physical education (PE)-related home–school collaboration as experienced by parents of children with disabilities. We further explore which conditions parents experienced as either promoting or inhibiting the collaborative relationship and how they became involved in school activities to secure quality education in PE. The data consisted of 25 semi-structured interviews with parents of c…
Parents' experiences of diagnostic processes of young children in Norwegian day-care institutions
Framed by the sociology of childhood and Foucauldian-inspired perspectives, this article is focused on parents' experiences of parent-professional encounters in diagnostic processes of young children enrolled in Norwegian early childhood education and care (ECEC) institutions or schools. Based on qualitative interviews with parents, we explore how they participate and manoeuvre in encounters with professionals during processes in which their chil…
