How Do Social Workers Cope with Hopeless Missions and Dirty Work? A Biographical Approach to Class and Gender Variations
This article looks at the work of legal guardians in Switzerland. They are civil servants, typically qualified social workers, responsible for implementing protective measures (“safeguarding”) for adults considered vulnerable. This work can be understood as “dirty work.” Professionals must provide imposed help to individuals who are often non-consenting. They carry out coercive tasks that are considered morally questionable. Furthermore, guardian…
Working while living with cystic fibrosis: Why symptom severity tells us little about employment outcomes?
This article examines the vocational and employment trajectories of people living with cystic fibrosis in French-speaking Switzerland. Drawing on qualitative data, it reveals that clinical severity alone is an ineffective predictor of these trajectories. These are dependent on the resources available within individuals' families. Furthermore, illness serves as a site of socialization: it fosters contrasting attitudes towards effort and pleasure. …

Connecting Work To Workers’ Social Past: A Dispositional Analysis of Police Work
This article explores the impact of experiences police officers went through before they joined the Force on how they see and perform their job. I propose a new approach to police culture and practices based on a Bourdieu-inspired model of analysis, which includes its subsequent development by Lahire’s ‘dispositional analysis’. The model looks at how dispositions interiorized—particularly through the experience of social mobility and gender socia…
You Should Maybe Work Together a Little Bit: Formulating Requests in Interprofessional Interactions
Based on an empirical analysis of video-recorded collaborative practice situations, this article looks at different ways in which a health professional can direct a request to another professional with the aim that he or she performs an action. Using a corpus of video-recorded interactions in different institutional settings and types of situations, it looks at how requests are formulated, showing that they can range from authoritative to mitigat…
Disagreements in Nursing Homes. Analysing the Competition between Occupations with Fuzzy Boundaries
This article looks at interprofessional disagreements about how care should be provided in nursing homes for elderly people. The article shows that, while work is discussed by referring to four general principles, their prioritization remains a point of contention. This priority ranking is specific to the norms of each profession involved, which are not always compatible
