  • Exploring links between local knowledge, values and livelihoods in land-sea interface

Open Access•Matías Barceló, Maria Tengö et al.•ARTICLE•Ecosystems and People•2024

Local knowledge and values of coastal communities offer insights into the intricate human-nature relationships in the land-sea interface. Considering a diversity of values unveils how people perceive nature, encompassing both tangible and intangible dimensions, and this understanding is part of how they navigate dynamic environmental challenges by embracing livelihood diversification spanning land-sea activities. Better understanding of these val…

  • Social acceptability of management actions for addressing different conflict scenarios between humans and wildlife in Patagonia

Marion Diaz, Javier A Simonetti et al.•ARTICLE•Human Dimensions of Wildlife•2019

Conflicts between humans and wildlife could generate problems for biodiversity, and conflict management is important for avoiding biodiversity loss. Social acceptability of management actions for mitigating these conflicts can influence the success of wild carnivore management. Our study was carried out in southern Chile where we evaluated levels of social acceptability and consensus (using PCI2) for frightening, relocating, and lethal control in…

  • Knowledge of Native Edible Plants in a Monoculture Plantation-Dominated Landscape

    Open Access•Santiago A Parra, Santiago Parra et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnobiology•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 57

The loss of forests is a factor that could account for the loss of local knowledge about edible plants. In Chile, the replacement of native vegetation by monoculture plantations of exotic trees has been the main cause of forest loss in recent times. We assess whether this loss of forests affects knowledge of wild edible plants by conducting household surveys in coastal rural localities in south-central Chile, subject to different degrees of repla…

  • Perceived changes in environmental degradation and loss of ecosystem services, and their implications in human well-being

Amanda Alfonso, Francisco Zorondo-Rodríguez et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017

Rural communities worldwide face a decrease of critical ecosystem services caused by replacement of native forests by commercial plantations. Replacement of native forest by commercial plantations decreases water provisioning, with possible negative impacts over well-being. We tested this hypothesis in Central Chile. We assessed subjective well-being (SWB) and local perceptions of changes in forest cover and water provision among 78 rural familie…

  • Archaeological Evidence of Rodent Consumption in Central Chile

    Open Access•Javier A Simonetti, Luis E Cornejo et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•1991•Cited by: 40•References: 5

We analyzed the remains of small mammals from two rockshelters in the pre-Andean mountains of central Chile. A significant fraction of the remains exhibited evidence of burning. Burned remains were present from 4460 to 1520 B.P. and belong to rodent species of large body size and weight that are either diurnal or colonial. We suggest that rodents were a constant food item for humans in central Chile, and that rodent species were selected based on…
