  • Hatred in Print

    Luc Racaut•BOOK•Hatred in Print•2017

Catholic polemical works, and their portrayal of Protestants in print in particular, are the central focus of this work. In contrast with Germany, French Catholics used printing effectively and agressively to promote the Catholic cause. In seeking to explain why France remained a Catholic country, the French Catholic response must be taken into account. Rather than confront the Reformation on its own terms, the Catholic reaction concentrated on d…

  • Vox Populi

    Luc Racaut•ARTICLE•French History•2015

Vox Populi, Olivier Christin’s analysis of the historical origins of the vote before universal suffrage, comes appropriately at a time of widespread disillusionment in Europe with democratic institutions. The sanction of majority rule no longer, it seems, satisfies the aspirations and hopes of an increasingly large proportion of the European electorate who revert to right-wing protest votes or regionalism as a way out of the political impasse. Pr…

  • A Coups de Libelles

    Luc Racaut•ARTICLE•French History•2014

The starting point of Tatiana Debbagi’s complex study of the modes of operation of the defamatory libel is Pierre de L’Estoile’s mémoires-journeaux. L’Estoile, who avidly collected printed materials, songs and rumours during the dramatic period of the League, is often evoked as evidence for the emergence in sixteenth-century France of an independent public opinion. The central question addressed by À Coups de Libelles is the role that printed boo…

    Luc Racaut•ARTICLE•French History•2012

The Commentarii of Stephanus Vitellius is an original manuscript previously unpublished that was kept in the Abbey of St Denis until it was rediscovered and translated by the editors. This is a rare document that was accompanied by a no less remarkable map portraying the battle that took place on 10 November 1567 on the plain that stretched between St Denis and Paris. The map dressed by the royal cartographer André Thévet was printed and purchase…

  • Education of the Laity and Advocacy of Violence in Print during the French Wars of Religion

    Open Access•Luc Racaut•ARTICLE•History•2010

At the turn of the seventeenth century King Henri IV of France sought to reconcile his Catholic and Protestant subjects by blaming the violent excesses of the French Wars of Religion on religious radicalism. In particular, Catholic preachers and pamphleteers were accused retrospectively of having poured oil on the fire of religious violence through vitriolic sermons and pamphlets. Historians have tended to reproduce this charge while at the same …

After Les Yeux pour le croire, Les Dix commandements en image (XVe-XVIIe siècles) that explored the Ten Commandments literally through the eyes of contemporary woodcuts, Olivier Christin pursues a reflexion on the intimate relationships that existed between confessional identity and material culture. This is pursued in a series of enlightening essays, each exploring one particular aspect of belief through visual material culture. The first sectio…

This article explores the activities of Nicolas Chesneau, a Parisian printer active between the beginning of the French Wars of Religion and the League. Nicolas Chesneau was a militant Catholic printer whose activity responded…

    Luc Racaut•ARTICLE•French History•2006

William Naphy’s book offers a salutary counterpoint to the numerous studies of witchcraft, plague and conspiracy theories that have flourished in the historiography over the past decades. Its field of enquiry, centring on Geneva, the county of Savoy and the pays de Vaud from the beginning of the sixteenth to the middle of the seventeenth century, may seem quite narrow. Its conclusions, however, are relevant for the whole of Europe and address dir…
