This grounded theory study explored the posttraumatic growth experiences of Middle Eastern and Afghan refugees resettled in the United States. T…

  • A Brief Relationship Education Pilot Intervention for Men Post Release

    Open Access•Sesen Negash, Patricia N E Roberson et al.•ARTICLE•The Prison Journal•2022

Romantic relationships are often fraught with challenges for individuals post-release. Yet, few relationships-focused services are offered during this important and complex transitional period. Using pre- and post-test survey data, this pilot study of 63 men living in a residential substance treatment facility post release evaluated the impact of a 20-h individual-oriented relationship education (RE) program (Within My Reach) on attitudes toward …

  • Families post‐release

Open Access•Sesen Negash, Klancy Chung et al.•ARTICLE•Family Process•2022

Family therapy has helped repair relational ruptures and restore stability within families for decades. However, service can be inaccessible and underutilized among many minoritized and stigmatized groups, including families post‐release. Harmful sociocultural and relational experiences pose considerable risks to families before, during, and after incarceration. While not exhaustive, this article highlights potential attitudinal, relational, and …

Nicole Van Ness, Marianne Mcinnes Miller et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Feminist Family Therapy•2017•Cited by: 5•References: 7

Women’s sexuality has been examined through political, religious, scientific, and social lenses. Despite advances, discourses driving sexual expression embody double standards, pathologizing, and silencing. Women’s own experiences are largely ignored in existing literatures. Foucauldian discourse analysis (FDA) is a qualitative methodology rooted in Foucault’s examinations of power and discourse construction. In this FDA, 111 women answered quest…

  • Trading Later Rewards for Current Pleasure

Sesen Negash, Nicole Van Ness Sheppard et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2015•Cited by: 7•References: 5

Internet pornography is a multi-billion-dollar industry that has grown increasingly accessible. Delay discounting involves devaluing larger, later rewards in favor of smaller, more immediate rewards. The constant novelty and primacy of sexual stimuli as particularly strong natural rewards make Internet pornography a unique activator of the brain's reward system, thereby having implications for decision-making processes. Based on theoretical studi…

Nathaniel M Lambert, Sesen Negash et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Clinical…•2012

We examined whether the consumption of pornography affects romantic relationships, with the expectation that higher levels of pornography consumption would correspond to weakened commitment in young adult romantic relationships. Study 1 (n = 367) found that higher pornography consumption was related to lower commitment, and Study 2 (n = 34) replicated this finding using observational data. Study 3 (n = 20) participants were randomly assigned to e…
