Impacts of community policing on security
This study adopts a quasi-experimental design to estimate the impact on security of the introduction of community policing in a district of the city of Mbujimayi, Democratic Republic of Congo. The authors suggest that security is best captured by a multidimensional index from which they derive a series of outcome indicators such as the incidence of insecurity, the vulnerability to insecurity, or the severity of insecurity. The data originate from…

Interview with Dr Monica Bonfanti, chief of the Geneva cantonal police
In the preamble to the interview with Geneva police chief Monica Bonfanti, a brief overview of the policing system and the history of Switzerland and Geneva will provide the reader with contextual
The International Civilian Police Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina
The agenda of the civilian police mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina evolved quite dramatically since its creation in 1996 under the framework of Annex 11 of the Dayton Peace Accord (DPA). Under the UN (1996–2002), the CIVPOL mission shifted from an initial programme centred on individuals—the micro level—with projects such as training, code of conduct, recruitment, and vetting, to an internal reorganization of all police forces of the country—the…
The Role of the Police
Under The Spotlight
Explanations of protest policing have neglected the "spotlight of the media." Based on data on repression and its media coverage in four Swiss cities from 1965 to 1994, our findings suggest that the mass media do have an impact on levels and forms of repression, along with political opportunity dimensions and levels of disruption. We identify two mechanisms. First, we show that the symbolic battles waged by protest groups and their outcomes affec…

Correcting for Selection Bias in Social Movement Research
Longitudinal and cross-national research on new social movements often relies on newspaper reports for data on the frequency and type of events. Reporting by newspapers is, however, known to be strongly affected by selection bias. Newspapers report events that they find "newsworthy." Surprisingly, the effect of these selection biases on data analyses has received scant attention, and the methodology to correct for these biases hardly has been dis…

Social movements and direct democracy in Switzerland
Taking a political process approach to the study of social movements, we analyze the impact of the availability of direct democratic institutions on the action repertory of Swiss social movements. Comparing social movements in the German and the Latin parts of the country, we show that the availability of direct‐democratic instruments induces most social movements to use them. This has a moderating impact on their action repertory. However, we ha…
Social Movements and Institutional Selectivity
Contrary to what is usually implied by work on the relationship between political opportunity structures and social movements, political institutions are not a general setting offering or denying formal access and political opportunities to every challenge, but rather favor certain types of movements and constrain others. This process of institutional selectivity depends on the relationship between the structure of a given political institution a…
