Evelyn Y Ho, Genevieve Leung et al.•ARTICLE•Health Communication•2023

Addressing patient-clinician communication barriers to improve multiple chronic disease care is a public health priority. While significant research exists about the patient-clinician encounter, less is known about how to support patient-clinician communication about lifestyle changes that includes the context of people's lives. Data come from a larger photo-based primary care study collected from 13 participants who were adults 60 or older with …

We provide contextual literature for understanding the pedagogical tensions around using these data from communication pedagogy rese…

  • Pilot Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial of Integrative Nutritional Counseling Versus Standard Diabetes Self-Management Education for Chinese Americans with Type 2 Diabetes

    Open Access•Evelyn Y Ho, Sunny Pak et al.•ARTICLE•Health Equity•2020

Purpose: Chinese Americans (CAs) with diabetes and limited English proficiency often struggle to adhere to standard diabetes diets focused on food measurement/restriction. Open Access•Han-Lin Chi, Janine K Cataldo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Transcultural Nursing•2018

Methods: Individual, semistructured interviews were conducted with 14 community-dwelling older Chinese Americans, 9 adult children, and 7 clinicians. The data were collected and analyz…

  • We (Tong) Chinese”

Genevieve Leung, Evelyn Y Ho et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of International and…•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 5

This paper explores discursive ways Chinese American older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) take ownership of their health management. Fifteen patient stakeholders with T2DM took part in four focus group interviews. We used qualitiative discourse analysis to examine how participants used the phrase, “We (Tong) Chinese,” and variants, to index models of Chinese-living-in-the-U.S. personhoods, to incorporate “Chinese” and “western” ways …

  • Behold the Power of Qi

    Evelyn Y Ho•ARTICLE•Research on Language and Social…•2006•Cited by: 6•References: 10

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has recently gained a great deal of popular and scholarly attention. However, little work in this area has examined how people actually talk about TCM as a health care system and its implicit assumptions about health, illness, and treatment. Based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in an acupuncture community, I describe a Qi-based speech code examining the importance and necessity of Qi (most simply translated…
