College Sexual Assault and Campus Climate for Sexual- and Gender-Minority Undergraduate Students
Sexual- and gender-minority (e.g., lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) undergraduate students are at greater risk for sexual assault victimization than their cisgender (i.e., nontransgender) heterosexual peers. However, few studies have examined how social environments affect sexual assault victimization among sexual- and gender-minority undergraduate students. Nevertheless, this research area was identified as a priority by the Institute of…
A retrospective of LGBT issues on US college campuses: 1990-2020
In this brief retrospective of LGBT issues on US College Campuses: 1990-2020, the authors first review the extensive changes in the language used to 'define' people within these communities. Given the fluid and evolving language used in sexual and gender minority communities, it is crucial to examine how community members are named and who is centered as a result of this naming. The authors use the terms queer-spectrum and trans-spectrum to honor…
The impact of campus climate on queer-spectrum student academic success
This study examines how campus climate directly affects academic success for queer-spectrum students. The linear regression analysis model with all independent variables explained 23% of the variance in academic success for queer-spectrum undergraduate students (p < 0.001). Three major constructs related to campus climate significantly affected academic success for queer-spectrum undergraduate students, including students' comfort with campus cli…
From Tuotilo to the First Manuscripts: The Shaping of A Trope Repertory at Saint Gall
Tuotilo serves as an appropriate starting point for a study of the Saint Gall trope repertory. The Saint Gall tropers date from a period considerably later than the time of composition of the earliest layers of the repertory, the gap can only be bridged through analysis of the manuscript sources and patterns of transmission, and by philological study. The repertory of proper tropes copied into Saint Gall Stiftsbibliothek 376, 378, 380 and 382 is …

The Influence of Climate on the Academic and Athletic Success of Student-Athletes: Results from a Multi-Institutional National Study
Students' perceptions of the campus climate can affect their success and outcomes. Student-athletes' experiences with campus life are unique. The Student-Athletes Climate Study (SACS) is a national study of over 8,000 student athletes from all NCAA sports and divisions. The purpose of the study was to examine the influence of individual and institutional characteristics, as mediated by climate, on student-athletes' (a) academic success, (b) athle…
The Influence of Campus Experiences on the Level of Outness Among Trans-Spectrum and Queer-Spectrum Students
This study utilized MANOVA and hierarchical multiple regression to examine the relationships between campus experiences and coming-out decisions among trans- and queer-spectrum undergraduates. Findings revealed higher levels of outness/disclosure for cisgender LGBQ women, and more negative perceptions of campus climate, classroom climate, and curriculum inclusivity and higher use of campus resources for trans-spectrum students. Results also revea…
Risk and Resilience During Transgender Identity Development: The Effects of Awareness and Engagement with Other Transgender People on Affect
Research examining risk and resilience among transgender individuals suggests that connection to a transgender community may be protective. Utilizing archival survey data of 3,087 adult transgender participants collected in 2005–06, this study further evaluated how awareness and engagement with other transgender people influences risk and resilience during early gender identity development. As hypothesized, among male-to-female and female-to-male…
Transformational Tapestry Model: A comprehensive approach to transforming campus climate
College campuses are complex social systems. They are defined by the relationships between faculty, staff, students, and alumni; bureaucratic procedures embodied by institutional policies; structural frameworks; institutional missions, visions, and core values; institutional history and traditions; and larger social contexts (Hurtado, Milem, Clayton-Pederson, & Allen, 1998). Academic communities expend a great deal of effort fostering a climate t…
Campus climates for sexual minorities
Sexual minorities encounter unique challenges due to their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression that often prevents them from achieving their full academic potential or participating fully in the campus community.
Differing Perceptions: How Students of Color and White Students Perceive Campus Climate for Underrepresented Groups
Using a campus climate assessment instrument developed by Rankin (1998), we surveyed students (n = 7,347) from 10 campuses to explore whether students from different racial groups experienced their campus climates differently. Students of color experienced harassment at higher rates than Caucasian students, although female White students reported higher incidence of gender harassment. Further, students of color perceived the climate as more racis…

From memory to record: Musical notations in manuscripts from Exeter
When Ælfric wrote that ‘every mass-priest should have a mass-book and epistle-book and song-book and reading-book and psalter and handbook and penitential and kalendar’, there is every possibility that by ‘song-book’ he was thinking of a book containing not just chant texts, but also their melodies. A type of musical notation recognized as Anglo-Saxon appears in more than one hundred manuscript sources of the late tenth and the eleventh centuries…
