Historical models of leadership within British Assemblies of God
This paper examines leadership models of British Assemblies of God in the years from about 1990 to 2016. The original model (dating back to 1924) made most important decisions on the floor of the annual ministerial conference after discussion or debate and usually a vote. This led to the election of different councils or committees who reported to the conference on an annual basis. An Executive Council was elected in the same way and had responsi…

Myk Habets and Gregory J. Liston, Starting with the Spirit: The T&T Clark Introduction to Third Article Theology
provides a devastating critique of the way in which the Church of England continues to 'other' those who do not sit at the nexus of power, not only in its pronouncements but in the very processes that it makes use of.The rot, she finds, is not merely in the outcomes but in the way the Church has sought to engage with division and disagreement -and she suggests that a focus on 'resolving' this, and finding a 'solution', is itself a problematic sym…
Reflecting as a Pentecostal on Pentecostal Education
This article offers a personal perspective on education from the point of view of a Pentecostal of more than fifty-five years’ standing. Having taught in secular and Christian settings and covered the age range from infants to postgraduates and having been a faculty member at Britain’s Assemblies of God college and, from there, moved out into teacher training in secular university settings, I shall consider curriculum, society, theology, and the …

The future of global Pentecostalism: Demographic trends, geo-political realities, ideologies, and eschatological models
This paper outlines ways of predicting the future of global Pentecostalism: making use of the current church growth and demographic trends, it extrapolates likely future growth of the movement; making use of possible shifts in geo-political realities, it locates Pentecostalism within the uncertain global landscape; assessing ideological models, it assesses the reliability of global societal developments; and reflecting on eschatological models, i…

Holiness, power and growth: The recent history of British Assemblies of God
The paper examines interpretations of holiness within Pentecostalism and specifically British Assemblies of God as (a) personal avoidance of such recreations as going to the cinema or football or cricket matches, reading novels, holding to teetotalism and the like and (b) moral campaigns to clean up the media or nudity in magazines along the lines Mary Whitehouse’s activities and it then follows the way the discourse of power from the mid-1990s h…

George Jeffreys: Pentecostal and Contemporary Implications
The life and work of the Welsh evangelist George Jeffreys resulted in the planting of two denominations in the UK between 1915 and 1962, when he died. The Elim churches continue to this day to be one of the larger classical Pentecostal denominations in the UK, while the Bible Pattern Fellowship dispersed on Jeffreys' death. The disputes that led to Jeffreys' departure from Elim were said to have arisen from his adherence to British Israel doctrin…
Luther and Pentecostalism
This paper considers similarities between the Lutheran Reformation and the Pentecostal outpouring that began at the start of the twentieth century. Four themes are highlighted: the work of Spirit, preaching, Jewish questions and philosophy. It is concluded that Pentecostal understandings of preaching and faith show similarities with, and differences from, the Lutheran position. More marked differences occur in respect of the Jewish people. In res…

Apostolic Networks in Britain Revisited
This essay presents an account of the theological ideas that led to the formation of apostolic networks in Britain in the 1970s. It takes note of the function of theology as a driver of ecclesiastical innovation and offers the thesis that, while theology provides ideas and arguments, society is the receptacle into which these ideas are poured. Consequently, similar ideas are expressed in different social forms as society changes. The essay commen…
A Comparison of Pentecostals in Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur: Culture and Belief
Using empirical and quantitative methods Pentecostal ministers are compared in the three locations of Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. After providing an account of the historical backgrounds of Pentecostal churches in these locations, similarities and differences in the samples may be attributed to environmental or cultural effects. The paper concludes that there is evidence that cultural differences affect the views of respondents in a va…
Peter Hocken: His Life and Work
This article discusses the life and work of the Roman Catholic Charismatic Peter Hocken. It shows how, over many publications and in a series of writings directed both to Catholics and to the wider Christian world, he has constructed a theological understanding of the outpouring of the Spirit in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The purpose of the Spirit in denominational and nondenominational streams turns on the key role of Messianic Je…

Pentecostal Churches and Homosexuality
Historically, the majority of Pentecostal churches stem from holiness and revivalistic streams of Christianity, while neo-Pentecostal churches are often indigenous plantings that broke away from congregations established by earlier Protestant mission. Given their stress on religious experience and their belief in the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit, Pentecostal churches have always stressed individual holiness, and this holiness is understood…

Empirical and historical perspectives on the growth of Pentecostal-style churches in Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong
This article considers the growth of Pentecostal-style churches in Southeast Asia, and specifically in Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. It outlines four reasons for the growth that occurred and then, using qualitative and quantitative data in a mixed mode, seeks to test the hypotheses it derives. It concludes that each of the hypotheses remains plausible but notes that contextual factors or major social disruptions undermine any determinist…

Missional education: Lessons from Southeast Asia
This paper outlines the missional education that helped to produce the churches of Southeast Asia and argues that missional education in the future would be improved if it ‘read’ the situation of the destination country of missionaries and took note of the typical trajectory of Pentecostal development over time. These suggestions are made against the background of 19th century Protestant mission and the rise of short-term missions
European Pentecostalism
Starting from small numbers before 1914, the Pentecostal and charismatic movement now comprises nearly one third of the whole of the global Christian population. Scholarly accounts of Pentecostal and charismatic congregations in various countries have been written but this book does something new. It provides an interconnected account of Pentecostalism in Europe, something never before been attempted because of the diversity of languages spoken a…
Phenomenology, Religious Education, and Piaget
This paper examines phenomenology and its psychological relationship to religious education. It comments on this relationship in the light of the critique of phenomenology which Piaget himself made towards the end of his life (Piaget, 1965), though it also draws attention to other aspects of phenomenology theory which are dissonant with Piagetian psychology. This paper, therefore, is not a broad philosophical critique of phenomenology, though an …

Each of the 1,339 respondents completed the Revised Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQR-S). The male ministers recorded lower psychoticism scores than the male population norms. The female ministers recorded lower neuroticism scores than the female population norms. These findings support the view that ministry may appeal particularly…

Personality, Mental Health and Glossolalia
This article reports on a survey of young men and women training for Pentecostal ministry. The survey was designed to test the relationship between glossolalia, or speaking in tongues, and personality. Personality theory, briefly outlined below, is complex and divided into several schools. For this reason it is necessary to show how findings derived from one school may be interpreted differently by another. Nevertheless, the general outline of pr…
Fowler, Spirituality and Values in Church Schools
This paper outlines possible connections between James Fowler's theory of faith development and spirituality. In this context spirituality is described as having two components: cognitive inclusiveness that points towards the transcendent and personal qualities. Since Fowler connects his theory with values, it is possible to show how values and spirituality may be related. The paper concludes by considering how church schools might foster spiritu…

These two groups were compared on a series of items designed to map out their psycho-social profiles and on the psychoticism dimension of personality. It was concluded that the two groups of ministers held two distinct worldviews the explanation for which was thought to lie in their personality diffe…

Ministers who expect to go through persecution are compared with ministers who expect to escape persecution supernaturally. …
Role Conflict and British Pentecostal Ministers
Church ministers often face the challenges of multiple, conflicting, and ambiguous roles, thus incurring job-related stress based upon the expectations of others and individual personality dynamics. Following the procedures utilized by L. J. Francis and R. Rodger (1994), the relationship of perceived role conflict and personality dynamics was investigated in 930 British Pentecostal ministers. These clergy completed a demographic survey, the Eysen…
The ‘initial evidence’: Implications of an empirical perspective in a British context
This paper compares the views of Elim and Assemblies of God ministers on the doctrinal issue of ‘the initial evidence’. It concludes that there is a considerable overlap between the two denominations, but also that there are marked differences. It also shows that significant numbers of Pentecostal ministers do not believe their own denomination’s fundamental doctrinal statements.I am grateful to Revd Desmond Cartwright for explaining, with histor…
