System Size and Structural Differentiation in Formal Organizations: A Problem of Partitions
The discovery of a volume, published by the Royal Society, dealing with partitions (an area of combinatorial mathematics) is reported to appear as both a solution to computational problems noted by Mayhew et al (1972) and a powerful tool by which a number of other baseline models may be constructed with varying sets of limiting assumptions. One of these other models is described and appears relevant to the study of differentiation in terms of ran…
New Methods for the Sociology of Religion
Recognizing that methods cannot be considered independently from theoretical and conceptual frameworks, this paper offers some observations on methods attached to consideration of religion a) as an independent variable and b) as a dependent variable. With respect to religion as an independent variable, the focus is on the multi-dimensional model developed by Glock and Stark, among others. The contributions, as well as the drawbacks of the model a…
Religious Membership and Religious Preference: Equal Indicators of Religiosity
Based on a questionnaire study of 405 students at three eastern colleges, it is shown that religious membership and religious preference are not interchangeable indices. As a consequence of using one or the other, the size and composition of the no religion group are affected. The two indicators relate differently to other -measures of religiosity and to a social attitude. Preference is correlated with pacifism, while membership is not. It is sug…
The Relation between Religious Commitment and Attitudes toward Induced Abortion
To the extent that induced abortion is considered as a form of fertility control, hypotheses relating attitudes toward abortion to religion can be formulated. The work of Glock and Stark and others suggest that a multi-dimensional measure of religiosity might be of utility in explaining variations in attitudes toward induced abortion. The relations between a multi-dimensional measure of religiosity and attitudes toward abortion are examined in a …
Delayed marriage and prospects for fewer births in Punjab villages
