The discovery of a volume, published by the Royal Society, dealing with partitions (an area of combinatorial mathematics) is reported to appear as both a solution to computational problems noted by Mayhew et al (1972) and a powerful tool by which a number of other baseline models may be constructed with varying sets of limiting assumptions. One of these other models is described and appears relevant to the study of differentiation in terms of ranks such as the military chain of command
