Affective construal in deictic gestures as evidence for awareness in choice making
What is the role of deictic gestures in expressing affective valence, and can such gestures serve as an indicator of awareness in choice making? To examine this, we analyzed participants’ deictic gestures toward preferred and non-preferred picture alternatives in an experimental choice justification task. The task involved manipulation: in some trials, participants were presented with the rejected alternative as if that had been their choice and …

Atomic War or World Peace Order? Karl Jaspers, Denis de Rougemont, Bertrand Russell
The detonations of atomic bombs over two major Japanese cities and the development of nuclear weapons stirred many responses from intellectuals. Immediate responses were those of shock and fear, constituting a distinct feeling of dystopianism in what earlier research has described as a utopian moment. This article assesses how Karl Jaspers, Denis de Rougemont and Bertrand Russell responded to the bomb, from the years 1945–1958, drawing upon the d…
Introduction
Any number of issues raise the question of internationalism today – from the Corona virus to the nationalist waves in contemporary politics to the general nature of the post-Cold War environment. However, in the face of meaningful election cycles, debates over Brexit, torsions of ‘nationalism’ versus ‘globalism’, and skepticism towards international institutions, it’s useful to perspectivize the issue in relation to not only intellectual history,…
Entanglements
This article elaborates upon the idea of cultural borders from the perspective of European unification before EU-integration. It addresses discussions on how to manage or even transcend religious and linguistic borders, from William Penn, Novalis and Conrad Friedrich Schmidt-Phiseldeck, to Johann Caspar Bluntschli and Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi. The historical contexts are nationalism and Europeanization. These are further illuminated by the use …
Introduction
Cultural borders play a significant part in modern European history as well as in the present. This Focus has been chosen in order to enhance reflections on the transcendence of cultural borders; how the crossing is conducted, why we want to move beyond cultural borders, and what actually lies beyond them. The individual articles investigate ways to transcend borders, primarily those of the European nation state, in different genres from the nine…
Introduction
This special issue re-evaluates the 1950s as a period of transnationalism in ideas and political practices, offering innovative insights into political history and political ideas. Without setting the national and transnational spheres against each other, the issue argues that the dialectics between the two was a defining element of Europe in this period. The articles explore transnational cooperation and exchanges among intellectuals, politician…
Europe of nations, Europe without nationalism
In the end of the 1940s and early 1950s, the discussion among authors, philosophers and other intellectuals on the future of Europe took on themes from the inter war period like crisis, decline and nihilism, but they also added new takes. This contextual examination treats a transnational discourse on European cultural unity. As a starting point, it takes the changing framework of the postwar era with on the one hand the early repeating of the cr…
European Identity and the Second World War
Multimodal constructions in children
Swedish children’s use of the headshake from 18 to 30 months shows a developmental progression from rote-learned and formulaic coordination with speech to increasingly more flexible and productive coordination with speech. To deal with these observations, I make use of the concept of multimodal constructions , to extend usage-based approaches to language learning and construction grammar by inclusion of the kinetic domain. These ideas have conseq…
The Critique of European Nihilism. Interpretation, Responsibility, and Action
The concept of ‘nihilism’ is ambiguous and has had and continues to be attached to several different usages. This special Focus primarily looks at the ways in which ‘nihilism’, in and following the works of Friedrich Nietzsche, has been understood as specifically tied to a crisis of European culture or civilisation, and has come to be politicised in conjunction with the National Socialist and Fascist movements in Germany and Italy during the twen…
Nihilism and Responsibility in the Writings of Karl Jaspers
The aim of this article is to describe the connection of the concepts of nihilism and responsibility in the writings of Karl Jaspers. The article starts with his early writings in the late 1910s and traces his use of nihilism until the late 1950s. Jaspers first defines nihilism in a general, anthropological sense. It is essential to the human condition, which involves questioning everything. However, as his critique of contemporary society evolve…

An Uncomfortable Responsibility
This article discusses the ethics of nuclear waste management in terms of the concept of responsibility for the harmful effects of modern technology. At present, the principle that every country and new generation should assume responsibility for the nuclear waste they produce is challenged by a globalised industry and the repositories of nuclear waste that have accumulated over the past fifty years and been left for future generations to manage.…
