  • Moving from guideline to measure to findings

Open Access•Amy Gullickson, Taimur Siddiqi et al.•ARTICLE•Evaluation Journal of Australasia•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 2

In 2013, the Australasian Evaluation Society (AES) launched the Evaluators’ Professional Learning Competency Framework. In 2020, the AES (now Australian Evaluation Society) partnered with learnevaluation.org to develop an online self-assessment for the AES community. The AES Competencies were explicitly designed to support professional learning, not as any kind of assessment instrument. Therefore, work was needed to update the competencies into a…

  • Convict Transportation to New South Wales, 1787–1849

Open Access•Gary Sturgess, Gary L Sturgess et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Economic History Review•2018

Previous research into Australian convict transportation has concluded that a significant downturn in mortality rates occurred with the appointment of naval surgeons as superintendents in 1815. Statistical analysis of convict ships sent to New South Wales between 1787 and 1849 shows a more significant downturn occurred in 1800, following the introduction of closer supervision of ships' surgeons. The contracting system established by the Navy Boar…

The transportation of convicts to the British penal colony at New South Wales in the late 18th and early 19th centuries was largely undertaken by private merchants under contract to government. In the early years, the outcomes of this system, as measured by mortality rates, were mixed, but by the turn of the century, public officials had refined its operation, resulting in a significant decline in convict deaths. Close study of the evolution of t…

  • A quality assessment tool for non-specialist users of regression analysis

    George Argyrous•ARTICLE•Evidence & Policy•2015

This paper illustrates the use of a quality assessment tool for regression analysis. It is designed for non-specialist ‘consumers’ of evidence, such as policy makers. The tool provides a series of questions such consumers of evidence can ask to interrogate regression analysis, and is illustrated with reference to a recent study published in a peer-reviewed journal. The application of the tool highlights the need for non-specialists to develop the…

  • Evidence Based Policy

    Open Access•George Argyrous•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Public…•2012•Cited by: 9•References: 5

This article provides a practical guide for improving the quality of evidence‐based policy. Rather than adopting an approach that gives priority to particular types of research methodologies, this paper argues that evidence drawn from any methodology will improve if standards of transparency and accountability are followed in the process of gathering, analysing, interpreting, and presenting evidence for policy. The papers details what these stand…
