Culture and sexuality in Finnish health education textbooks
In Finland, Young people’s sexuality education has not been examined from a multicultural perspective, with the exception of a few policy-oriented papers. This paper examines how cultural diversity is addressed in chapters on sexuality and sexuality education in Finnish health education textbooks. The analysis is based on material contained in textbooks used in grades 7–9 and upper secondary schools. Findings suggest that cultural diversity is in…
Young People in Reception Centres
Global migration poses particular concerns for children and young people. Eighty per cent of asylum seekers moving to Finland in autumn 2015 were under the age of 35. In spite of statistics like these, the consequences of global migration on children and young people are seldom mentioned in policy and youth research. Young People in Reception Centres aims to address this research gap by drawing on the work of youth researchers and specialists wor…
Intergenerational negotiations on (hetero)sexuality and romantic relationships – views of young people and parents in multi-ethnic contexts
This article focuses on intergenerational negotiations on young people’s (13–19 years) sexuality and romantic relationships in families where one or both of the parents have migrated to Finland. By utilising the theoretical framework of intersectionality and negotiability of family relationships, we seek to diversify the often problem-oriented and culture-related examinations of ethnic minority families and young people’s position in them. Method…
F inland
Finland has been almost untouched by immigration until mid‐1990; the country was for long time a country of emigration, especially to Sweden. The number of immigrants is still relatively small by comparison to numbers in the European Union. Russians and Estonians form the largest minority groups according to language and ethnicity. Finland has never been culturally homogenous, even though the recent anti‐immigration debate leans on a national ide…
Exceptionalism and Sexularism in Finnish Sex Education
The multiculturalism of Finnish society is under intensive discussion. Part of this debate deals with girls from migrant backgrounds and their position within and outside the family. At the same time, international research on girlhood and migration shows that public discussion about girls from migrant backgrounds is often linked to sexual rights, sex education and gender equality. In this article, the author asks how complex generational and gen…
New Challenges for Nordic Welfare Services
This article summarises the results of a two-phase research project, which concentrated on leisure practices of ethnic minority youth and their expectations on multicultural youth services. The question is how youth work as 'cultureless' principles of Nordic welfare universalism function in contemporary social conditions. Have youth workers and administrative authorities adopted multicultural demands of increasing ethnic diversity? The case of Fi…
"Save the Girls!" Gender Equality and Multiculturalism in Finnish Youth Work Contexts
This article examines multiculturalism and gender equality in the light of ethnicity, gender, and agency so as to illustrate how gender equality is used as a marker of Finnishness in various youth work contexts. The data presented consists of interviews with youth workers (n=42) and ethnographic fieldwork carried out from 2003 to 2005. The results illustrate that questions related to multiculturalism have enhanced the visibility of gender equalit…
