  • Switching from cigarettes to Iqos

    Janet Audrain‐mcgovern, E Paul Wileyto et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2024

    NCT05076708

  • Effects of Modified Tobacco Risk Products with Claims and Nicotine Features on Perceptions among Racial and Ethnic Groups

Open Access•Teresa DeAtley, Andrea C Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Research suggests consumers may misunderstand modified risk tobacco product (MRTP) claims. We examined the effects of nicotine content across four tobacco products with and without MRTP claims among a racially and ethnically diverse sample of adults who do and do not smoke. Adults ( n = 1484) aged 21-65 completed an online experiment using a 2 × 2 × 4 mixed factorial design to examine the effects of tobacco product (Classic White Snus, IQOS, JUUL…

  • Effects of cigarette package colors and warning labels on marlboro smokers’ risk beliefs, product appraisals, and smoking behavior

Open Access•Matthew D Stone, Melissa Mercincavage et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

    November 25, 2014; Registration number: NCT02301351

  • Effect of sweet flavouring on the rewarding and reinforcing value of cigarillo use among young adults

    Janet Audrain‐mcgovern, Divya Manikandan et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2023

Sweet flavouring increases the abuse liability of cigarillos among young adults as reflected in greater liking, motivation to use and actual use. Banning sweet flavouring in cigarillos may diminish their use in young adults.Trial registration number CT.gov (NCT05092919)

  • Iqos print magazine advertising characteristics and reach before and after FDA authorisation as a modified risk tobacco product

Ollie Ganz, Andrew A Strasser et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2023

After receiving MRTP authorisation, IQOS increased ad expenditures in print magazines with a readership comprised of primarily women. If IQOS returns to the US market, it will be important for tobacco control to monitor their advertisement content, placement, and expenditures

  • Tobacco minimum packaging policy to reduce cigarillo use among young people

Darren Mays, Andrea C Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2022

Young adult cigarillo smokers prefer smaller packs in conditions where pricing incentivises smaller packs. Minimum pack size policies may reduce the appeal of cigarillos among young adults, especially less frequent cigarillo smokers. Pack size policy should take into consideration price, and ideally these two factors should be addressed together

  • The role of Iqos risk perceptions on cigarette smoking behaviours

Teresa DeAtley, Matthew D Stone et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2022

Smokers reduced their smoking rate and increased motivation to quit smoking while using IQOS. IQOS risk perceptions did not directly account for reductions in smoking, although they may contribute indirectly through increased IQOS use

  • Tailored Cigarette Warning Messages

    Open Access•Hollie L Tripp, Justin C Strickland et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Current text-only cigarette warning labels (long-term, loss-framed messages) may not motivate positive changes in smoking behavior. The current project was a cross-sectional study examining the effects of tailored cigarette warnings on perceived message effectiveness (PME) in adult smokers ( n = 512) conducted using Amazon Mechanical Turk (M-Turk) in January-February 2020. Participants were an average age of 40.7 (SD = 11.6), with the majority of…

  • The Perceived Impact of Covid-19 among Treatment-Seeking Smokers

    Open Access•Zoe Rosoff-Verbit, Erin Logue-Chamberlain et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on behavioral health, including tobacco use, are not fully known. The current study sought to measure the perceived impact of COVID-19 and the resulting stay-at-home orders in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Buffalo, New York on smokers enrolled in four smoking cessation trials between March 2020 and July 2020. The survey collected quantitative data regarding life changes due to COVID-19, health/exposure s…

  • Shedding ‘light’ on cigarette pack design

Melissa Mercincavage, Benjamin Albelda et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2020

Misperceptions about nicotine and tar exist years after rebranding Marlboro Lights as Marlboro Gold. Biological results support that Gold smokers do not have lower toxicant exposure. The US should consider comprehensive packaging or product design regulations to properly inform smokers of product risks.Trial registeration number NCT02301351

  • Association of Electronic Cigarette Use With Initiation of Combustible Tobacco Product Smoking in Early Adolescence

Adam M Leventhal, David R Strong et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA•2015

IMPORTANCE: Exposure to nicotine in electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) is becoming increasingly common among adolescents who report never having smoked combustible tobacco. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether e-cigarette use among 14-year-old adolescents who have never tried combustible tobacco is associated with risk of initiating use of 3 combustible tobacco products (ie, cigarettes, cigars, and hookah). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Longitud…

  • Cigarette Smoking, Nicotine, and Body Weight

    Janet Audrain‐mcgovern, J Audrain-McGovern et al.•ARTICLE•Clinical Pharmacology and…•2011

Smokers generally gain weight when they quit smoking; this weight gain can lessen some of the health benefits of quitting smoking. We review the effectiveness of behavioral and pharmacological approaches to mitigating weight gain in the context of quitting smoking and consider mechanisms that could potentially account for the effects of smoking and nicotine on body weight. Understanding how nicotine affects body weight may lead to novel pharmacol…

  • A Randomized, Controlled Trial of Financial Incentives for Smoking Cessation

Kevin G Volpp, Andrea B Troxel et al.•ARTICLE•New England Journal of Medicine•2009

BACKGROUND: Smoking is the leading preventable cause of premature death in the United States. Previous studies of financial incentives for smoking cessation in work settings have not shown that such incentives have significant effects on cessation rates, but these studies have had limited power, and the incentives used may have been insufficient. METHODS: We randomly assigned 878 employees of a multinational company based in the United States to …

  • Does delay discounting play an etiological role in smoking or is it a consequence of smoking

  • Tobacco use and cessation in psychiatric disorders

Douglas Ziedonis, Brian Hitsman et al.•ARTICLE•Nicotine & Tobacco Research•2008

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) convened a meeting in September 2005 to review tobacco use and dependence and smoking cessation among those with mental disorders, especially individuals with anxiety disorders, depression, or schizophrenia. Smoking rates are exceptionally high among these individuals and contribute to the high rates of medical morbidity and mortality in these individuals. Numerous biological, psychological, and soci…

  • Beliefs About the Risks of Smoking Mediate the Relationship Between Exposure to Smoking and Smoking

Dalia Rodríguez, Daniel Rodríguez et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2007

OBJECTIVE: Peer and family smoking are key predictors of adolescent smoking. Yet, it is unclear whether the effect of these variables is direct or indirect through the effects of mediating mechanisms. One possible mechanism is smoking risk beliefs. We hypothesized an indirect effect such that exposure to peer and family smoking may affect adolescents' smoking through two sets of risk beliefs; beliefs about the personal harm of smoking, and belief…

  • High School Seniors’ Smoking Initiation and Progression 1 Year After Graduation

Kenneth P Tercyak, Dalia Rodríguez et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 18

We explored cigarette smoking prevalence rates in former high school seniors 1 year after graduation and found that among 12th grade never smokers, 25% initiated smoking, and among 12th grade ever smokers, 39% increased their cigarette use. Alcohol use in 12th grade, along with not attending college, were both positively related to smoking progression. Risk for smoking initiation does not end at adolescence, and the public health community must c…

  • Developmental Heterogeneity in Adolescent Depressive Symptoms

Dalia Rodríguez, Daniel Rodríguez et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2005

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has indicated an association between smoking and depression in adolescents, although the nature of the relationship is controversial. We sought to understand this relationship better in a prospective study by investigating whether there are subpopulations of adolescents with different relationships between smoking and depressive symptoms. METHODS: Our sample was 925 adolescents attending one of five Northern Virginia …
