  • A proposed model of parental behaviours of music practice

Chunxiao Zhang, Bo Wah Leung et al.•ARTICLE•Music Education Research•2023

The primary purpose of this study is to explore how parents involve themselves in their children’s music practice. It is based on the retrospective views of Chinese collegiate students majoring in music. A total of 14 Chinese students participated in individual semi-structured interviews. The qualitative analysis in this study centred on the type and frequency of parental behaviours. The results demonstrate that each of the participants remembere…

  • Aebersold’s Mediated Play-A-Long Pedagogy and the Invention of the Beginning Jazz Improvisation Student

    Open Access•Matthew D Thibeault•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•2021•Cited by: 1

In this historical study, I present the emergence and evolution of Jamey Aebersold’s Play-A-Long volumes and their key role in bringing jazz improvisation to formal music education. Drawing on oral histories and using a framework from sound studies, I present chord-scales and pattern playing as Deweyan conceptual technologies that assist beginners in developing a mature technique. • Dewey’s Musical Allergy and the Philosophy of Music Education

    Open Access•Matthew D Thibeault•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•2020

This historical study explores John Dewey’s ideas regarding music and music education through primary sources (his published writings, correspondence, and transcriptions of class lectures) and secondary sources (biographies and related scholarly literature). Dewey’s belief that he was unmusical is presented, including via a consideration of his novel conception of rhythm absent musical examples. Despite this belief, this study posits a case for a…

  • Learning With Sound Recordings

    Open Access•Matthew D Thibeault•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•2018•Cited by: 2

This article presents a history of mediated pedagogy in the Suzuki Method, the first widespread approach to learning an instrument in which sound recordings were central. Media are conceptualized as socially constituted: philosophical ideas, pedagogic practices, and cultural values that together form a contingent and changing technological network. Suzuki’s early experiments in the 1930s and 1940s established central ideas: the importance of repe…

  • Music Education for All through Participatory Ensembles

    Open Access•Matthew D Thibeault•ARTICLE•Music Educators Journal•2015•Cited by: 3

This article explores how the participatory field can complement and enhance even successful music education programs. The participatory field, part of Thomas Turino's four-field framework, conceptualizes the musical values and practices of societies where musical participation is nearly universal. The participatory field contrasts with the specialist-oriented presentational field found in most music programs in U.S. schools. Three examples, a sa…
