I saw, I reported, I inferred
This study investigates evidential meanings, referring to the information sources available to the speaker (i.e., direct witnessing, report, or inference), expressed through syntactic and lexical strategies in French. Across three experimental studies, we examined French subordinate structures, including complement, relative, pseudo-relative, and infinitive ECM clauses, that encompass perception or reporting verbs. We used witness rating, informa…
Capturing expletive negation with complex left branches
In this paper, we examine the cross-linguistic syncretisms between markers of negation and ‘expletive negation’ ( exn ), i.e., a formal instance of negation lacking negative meaning, in fear -clauses. We argue that these syncretisms reflect structural proximity to the negative functional sequence (cf. De Clercq (2020) and Baunaz & Lander (2023) ) and that exn realises a high, epistemic modal feature (cf. Makri (2013) and Tsiakmakis & Espinal (202…
Deconstructing categories syncretic with the nominal complementizer
This paper investigates the internal structure of categories syncretic with the complementizer from a nanosyntactic perspective (cf. Starke 2009; 2014; Caha 2009). The (emotive factive) that- complementizer in Germanic, Romance, Hellenic, Slavic and Finno-Ugric languages has the same morphophonological form as other nominal categories, like demonstrative, interrogative, relative pronouns and indeterminate nouns. We claim that this homophony is no…
Romance Languages and Linguistic Theory 11
We have divided the present volume into three major representative subfields, with four articles each: Syntax-Semantics, Morphosyntax
French “quantifiers” in questions
Building on an experimental study, I show that homophonous wh-phrases like qui ‘who’ in French correlate with prosodic differences when specificity and partitivity come into play, something not found with bare Universal Quantifiers like chacun ‘each’ and tous ‘all’. Rather than homophony I claim that these wh-phrases are syncretic. I show that (a) wh-phrases and bare Universal Quantifiers are complex phrases, lexicalizing structures of different …
