Finding the Invisible Women: Gender Stereotypes versus Student Interest in Foreign Policy and Security Subfields
Foreign policy and security studies typically are considered male-dominated domains in the discipline of international relations (IR), yet many women work in these policy domains, particularly in the United States. The “invisible women” working in foreign policy often come from fields such as IR, in which gender stereotypes may influence their understanding of the careers available to them. The Measure of a Nation: Lithuanian Identity in the New Century
Using original and secondary survey data, the authors study the interaction of ethnic and civic factors that Lithuanians consider salient to their national identity. Factor analysis of the original survey data indicates that there are at least three coherent versions of Lithuanian national identity adhered to by young Lithuanians; two of these are ethnic in nature, while the third is civic. Seizing the Opportunity: Euroscepticism and Extremist Party Success in the Post-Maastricht Era
Can extremist parties benefit from a backlash against European Union integration? A theoretical model that integrates demand-side, supply-side and political opportunity space explanations for extremist party success is used here in an effort to predict the conditions under which extremist parties may have utilized increased public discontent with EU integration to increase their vote share in national legislative elections. Early commentators on the newly independent Belarusian state of the 1990s indicated that there was something lacking in Belarusian identity.
