The contribution of social determinants of health to long-term outcomes following traumatic brain injury
Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) are a significant factor in health outcomes for both acute and chronic health conditions, but systematic research related to outcomes from traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been limited. This study explores the relationship between individual and neighborhood-level SDoH and TBI outcomes to understand the extent of their influence on long-term recovery. Hybrid panel models that decompose time-varying predictors …
Principal Leadership in a Time of Change
Education is undergoing a period of sustained change from a focus on traditional skills and compliance to positional authority, to a focus on 21st century skills and more adaptable behaviors. In the light of this changing context, this study examined the role of school principalship and identified those attributes which teachers and students recognize as being desirable in a school leader today. Principals come in all shapes and sizes, have diffe…
Rural–Urban Differences in Behavioral Outcomes among Adults with Lifetime History of Traumatic Brain Injury with Loss of Consciousness
This study examined if the associations between lifetime history of traumatic brain injury (TBI) with loss of consciousness (LOC) and unhealthy alcohol use or mental health problems differ by location of living (rural vs. urban). The lifetime history data of TBI with LOC, location of living, unhealthy alcohol use (binge drinking, heavy drinking), and mental health problems (depression diagnosis, number of poor mental health days) were sourced fro…
Do state supports for persons with brain injury affect outcomes in the 5 Years following acute rehabilitation
While a substantial literature has examined the effects of individual and family-level factors on outcomes following traumatic brain injury (TBI), minimal attention has been directed to the potential influence of the larger environmental context on outcomes. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effects of state-level resources and supports as an environmental factor influencing long-term outcomes from TBI using data from the TB…

Space, Modernity, and Emptiness
One of the ways in which Christian groups responded to the challenges of modernity was by positioning themselves differently in space. In the interest of better understanding that process, let us think for a moment about the social system, the social space to be precise, within which groups exist. As one starting point for that, it is useful to acknowledge that social groups define themselves in relation to others. Specifically, groups define the…
Alcohol Use After Combat-Acquired Traumatic Brain Injury
Military personnel engage in unhealthy alcohol use at rates higher than their same age, civilian peers, resulting in negative consequences for the individual and jeopardized force readiness for the armed services. Among those returning from combat deployment, unhealthy drinking may be exacerbated by acute stress reactions and injury, including traumatic brain injury (TBI). Combat-acquired TBI is common among personnel in the current conflicts. Al…

Emotion and Religious Community in America
Emotion is an important component of religion in America. Different kinds of emotion have emerged in a wide variety of American religious settings. Wonder, hope, fear, hatred, love, anger, and other emotions are performed by Americans, individually and collectively, according to scripts provided by religious traditions. Contact with God or the divine typically is conceptualized as a matter of feeling, and for many Americans, ‘knowing’ comes from …

Body and Soul
Our fascination with New England Puritans is never-ending. Poised on the brink of modernity, this small but determined band of seekers has been placed on the historical cusp between two worlds-the world we have lost (with its gentle agrarian rhythms and communal ethos) and the world we have gained (with its strident individualism and ruthless economic imperatives). From Max Weber to Sacvan Bercovitch, the tortured soul of the Puritan has come to …

Catholick Congregational Clergy and Public Piety
The history of Congregationalism in early eighteenth-century Boston has long been dominated by the figure of Cotton Mather (1663-1728), the learned pastor of Boston's Second Church. From Benjamin Franklin's notice of Mather's "do-good" campaign of Christian charitable works to recent scholarly studies of Mather's closet piety, historians have measured the religious mood of the period by the yardstick of ideas, joys, and complaints in Mather's vol…

Effects of Overt and Silent Study on Recall of Visual Information by Head-Injured Patients
A 2 × 2 factorial design was used to examine the immediate recall of traumatic head-injured and hospitalized controls under two conditions of study. Subjects recalled details from pictures that were either examined silently (silent study) or by naming details aloud (overt rehearsal). Analysis showed a significant interaction for type of study by type of subject, with head-injured subjects recalling more details using overt rehearsal while hospita…
Comparison of Intelligence and Memory in Patients with Diffuse and Focal Injury
Solomon, Greene, Farr, and Kelly in 1986 speculated that large discrepancies between Intelligence and Memory quotients (IQ-MQ) reflecting poorer performance on memory casks may be due to focal brain damage, while smaller differences may result from diffuse damage. The present study investigated this hypothesis in a rehabilitation population with sufferers of unilateral cerebrovascular accidents (CVA) representing focal damage and those with close…

A Tribute to the Professor
At the recent meeting of the American Society of Church History in New York I was recollecting with a friend our common experience in a graduate seminar at the University of Chicago. In the course of that conversation we came to realize that the majority of the papers from the seminar eventually had found their way into print, in one form or another. We noted with satisfaction how seeds planted years ago had borne some fruit, but with that curiou…
