  • What is wrong with exclusivism? Religious exclusivism between epistemic overconfidence and epistemic humility

    Open Access•Dirk-Martin Grube•ARTICLE•International Journal for…•2024

I compare the discussion on exclusivism in religion to the discussion on exclusivism in general. With defenders of religious exclusivism, such as Plantinga, I argue that it is a subset of general exclusivism and is as little blameworthy as the latter is. This explains why defenders of religious exclusivism are right in assuming that the burden of proof is on the shoulders of the critics of exclusivism. Yet, this answer solves only part of the pro…

  • Religiously Exclusive, Socially Inclusive

    Open Access•B J G Reitsma, Dirk-Martin Grube et al.•BOOK•Religiously Exclusive, Socially…•2023•References: 6

The present volume Religiously Exclusive, Socially Inclusive?A Religious Response is the fruit of a research project of scholars and academic researchers.Between exclusion and inclusion there exists a certain tension. To some extent all religions are exclusive, either in their view on salvation or in their outlook on society, as will be introduced in Chapter 1.Amid all kinds of challenges and conflicts between religious groups in our world today, …

  • Tillich’s Method of Correlation

Wessel Stoker, Dirk-Martin Grube•ARTICLE•NTT Journal for Theology and the…•2020

The first round of the discussion is on Paul Tillich’s famous method of correlation. This method implies that the theological answers are connected with the philosophically-existentialist questions humans ask (rather than being unconnected as in Barthianism). Wessel Stoker worries that this method may privilege Christianity and a particular concept of God over other (quasi-)religions and other concepts in unwarranted ways. Dirk-Martin Grube consi…

  • Reply to Henk van den Belt’s and Rick Benjamins’ articles

    Dirk-Martin Grube•ARTICLE•NTT Journal for Theology and the…•2020

In the first part, Dirk-Martin Grube follows Paul Tillich’s leads by suggesting that revelation consists primarily in knowledge of knowledge rather than knowledge of facts. Grube holds that the evidence for the resurrection is such that its historicity can neither be confirmed (against Henk van den Belt) nor denied. Rather, it should be considered to be logically undecidable. Different from Van den Belt, Grube follows Tillich by sympathizing with…

  • Realism, Foundationalism, and Constructivism

    Dirk-Martin Grube, Dirk-M Grube•ARTICLE•Neue Zeitschrift für Systematische…•1998

  • A Critical Reconstruction of Paul Tillich's Epistemology

    Open Access•Dirk-Martin Grube•ARTICLE•Religious Studies•1997

Opinions differ on the importance of epistemology for Tillich. While Dorothy Emmet suggests that epistemology is in the centre of Tillich's thinking, Henel believes that Tillich did not take any serious interest in epistemology proper. Since Tillich tries to downplay the relevance of epistemological concerns, it would seem that Henel's judgement is closer to the truth. Yet, as a consequence of his German philosophical education, Tillich employs a…

  • Religious Experience After the Demise of Foundationalism

    Open Access•Dirk-Martin Grube•ARTICLE•Religious Studies•1995

In this article, I argue that foundationalist reconstructions of religious experience lose on all counts: First, philosophical defences of foundationalism are untenable. Second, the theological benefits that can be reaped from foundationalism come at too high a price. I show that both William Alston's and Alvin Plantinga's foundationalism leads to sceptical conclusions. Third, I argue that the epistemic implications of foundationalist reconstruct…
