  • Famine at birth

    Open Access•Shaikh Eskander, E B Barbier•ARTICLE•Environment and Development…•2025

We use childhood exposure to disasters as a natural experiment inducing variations in adulthood outcomes. Following the fetal origin hypothesis, we hypothesize that children from households with greater famine exposure will have poorer health outcomes. Employing a unique dataset from Bangladesh, we test this hypothesis for the 1974–75 famine that was largely caused by increased differences between the price of coarse rice and agricultural wages, …

  • Corruption in Cyclone Relief and Reconstruction

Shaikh Eskander, Asad Islam et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2025

After the 2009 cyclone ‘Aila’, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh announced a special assistance of Tk. 20,000 (∼$300) to rebuild the houses of the affected households. We examine the role of networks in determining the incidence and extent of corruption associated with this grant by using two rounds of a household-level survey collected before and after the announcement and distribution of the grant. Our results inform that although bribery and mi…

  • Revisiting Copenhagen climate mitigation targets

Open Access•Shuping Li, Jing Meng et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Climate Change•2024

Many economies set climate mitigation targets for 2020 at the 2009 15th Conference of the Parties conference of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Copenhagen. Yet no retrospective review of the implementation and actual mitigation associated with these targets has materialized. Here we track the national CO 2 emissions from both territory and consumption (trade adjusted) perspectives to assess socioeconomic factors affec…

  • Testing the Ambition Loop

Shaikh Eskander, Catherine Higham et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Comparative Policy…•2024•References: 5

One theory about company- and country-level climate actions is that they interact with one another through a mutually reinforcing “ambition loop”. Using publicly available data on country- and company-level net-zero targets, our econometric analysis reveals a positive relationship between state and company: a country introducing a domestic net-zero target in law increases the likelihood of companies introducing their own voluntary targets and vic…

  • Private disaster expenditures by rural Bangladeshi households

    Open Access•Shaikh Eskander, Paul Steele•ARTICLE•Climate and Development•2023

This paper investigates household’s private expenditures to cope with the harmful losses of climate change and disasters. Using household-level survey data from Bangladesh, this paper finds that disaster-affected rural Bangladeshi households allocate between $499 and $1076 in disaster-related expenditures. Such expenditures are always greater than their relevant precautionary savings, implying that those households may debt-finance their defensiv…

  • The triple differential vulnerability of female entrepreneurs to climate risk in sub‐Saharan Africa

Open Access•Kate Elizabeth Gannon, Elena Castellano et al.•ARTICLE•Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews…•2022•References: 38

The ability of businesses to adapt effectively to climate change is highly influenced by the external business enabling environment. Constraints to adaptive capacity are experienced by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across sub‐Saharan Africa, regardless of the gender of the business owner. However, gender is a critical social cleavage through which differences in adaptive capacity manifest and in Africa most entrepreneurs are women. We condu…

  • Adaptation to Natural Disasters through the Agricultural Land Rental Market

    Shaikh Eskander, Shaikh M S U Eskander et al.•ARTICLE•Land Economics•2022•Cited by: 1

We examine the effects of natural disasters on agricultural households that make rent-in or rent-out transactions. Our econometric approach accounts for the effects of disaster exposure on the adjustments in the quantity of operated land and agricultural income conditional on the land quantity adjustments. Using a household survey data set from Bangladesh, we find that farmers were able to partially ameliorate their losses from exposure to disast…

  • How do African SMEs respond to climate risks? Evidence from Kenya and Senegal

    Open Access•Florence Crick, Shaikh Eskander et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 5

This paper investigates to what extent and how micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in developing countries are adapting to climate risks. We use a questionnaire survey to collect data from 325 SMEs in the semi-arid regions of Kenya and Senegal and analyze this information to estimate the quality of current adaptation measures, distinguishing between sustainable and unsustainable adaptation. We then study the link between these curren…
