Uneven resilience
Urban areas in developing countries are increasingly exposed to climate risks, yet vulnerability assessments often remain generalised and fail to capture intra-regional disparities. This study addresses this gap by developing a Climate Environmental Vulnerability Index (CEVI) for municipalities in Gauteng Province, South Africa, over the period 2010–2024. The CEVI integrates 17 standardised indicators across three dimensions: exposure, sensitivit…
A sector-wide review of the Covid-19 impact on the South African agricultural sector during 2020–21
The agriculture value chain is a complex web of interactions which includes activities within the agricultural sector and various support industries less directly linked to the sector. Despite being declared an essential service when the COVID-19 regulations were promulgated and lockdown restrictions imposed, the value chain still faced multiple bottlenecks and disruptions that needed to be overcome to ensure food security through this period. Th…
Producer prices, carcass classification and consumers’ willingness to pay for different sheep meat grades
South African sheep farmers receive different prices for animals of different age, carcass form and fat level. Older animals trade at a substantive discount to the younger animals due to the perceived tenderness and juiciness of the younger animal. There is however a question whether the size of the discount is warranted given that certain cuts from older animals are preferred by consumers for specific purposes. This paper applies an experimental…

Introduction to volume 60 of Agrekon
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the existence of the Agricultural Economics Association of South Africa (AEASA). This is young by most standards, but the milestone still makes us the 12th o
Developing Geographical Indications in the South
This book contributes to the literature on Geographical Indications (GIs) by providing key theoretical reflections from a five-year review process on the potential of GIs for agri-food products in Southern Africa. The contributors reflect on diverse GI processes and dynamics which operate at the local, national and international levels, thus enriching the understanding of GI dynamics and of the variety of policy options available for GI protectio…
Rural Poverty Dynamics and Refugee Communities in South Africa
The assimilation of refugees into their host community economic structures is often problematic. The paper investigates the ability of refugees in rural South Africa to accumulate assets over time relative to their host community. Bayesian spatial-temporal modelling was employed to analyse a longitudinal database that indicated that the asset accumulation rate of former Mozambican refugee households was similar to their host community; however, t…

Quantifying the Trade Effect of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Regulations of OECD Countries on South African Food Exports
Stringent sanitary and phytosanitary standards (SPS) have proliferated in the aftermath of the Uruguay Round Agreement on Agriculture (URAA). These standards are currently becoming a major stumbling block in agricultural trade for developing countries. Limited by inadequate resources and expertise, among other things, these countries also have poor participation rate in discussions related to SPS that impedes the representation of their interests…
Premature deagriculturalisation? Land inequality and rural dependency in Limpopo province, South Africa
Cross-national regressions reveal abnormally low agricultural workforce shares, given GNP, in developing countries that had historically concentrated land into large capital-intensive farms. We argue that such deagriculturalisation was premature, since its concomitant labour shedding has undesirable outcomes. In a new South African survey, a large proportion of rural households (and working-age persons) was ‘dependent’, relying for income almost …

New Institutional Arrangements for Rural Development
Until recently, smallholder farmers in the Transkei area had very limited access to a profitable market outlet for their wool. In response, the South African wool industry built shearing sheds, managed by a local association that sells directly to the brokers. This article investigates the effect of joint wool marketing through the shearing shed on the farmers' revenue from wool. A three-step regression model of the revenue from wool indicates th…
Linking agribusiness and small-scale farmers in developing countries
This article examines a new role for contract farming in developing countries in the light of the industrialisation of agriculture and the globalisation of world markets. A theoretical rationale for contracting in developing countries is developed on the basis of adopting new institutional economic theory for the purpose of matching governance forms to market failure problems and transaction characteristics. The history of contract farming is rev…
