Ekphrasis, intersemiotic translation, and transmediality in The Name of the Rose: From novel to film, graphic novel, and TV series
This article investigates a textual mechanism in Umberto Eco’s 1980 novel The Name of the Rose linked to ekphrasis, in order to highlight how literary writing produces various visual, auditory, and kinesthetic effects that mimic a cinematic effect. In my hypothesis, these effects, linked to the poetic nature and iconicity (Greimas, Algirdas J. 1984. Sémiotique figurative et sémiotique plastique [Figurative semiotics and plastic semiotics]. Actes …

Capire le serie tv. Generi, stili, pratiche
The Name of the Rose: Novel, Film, TV Series between Intermediality and Transmediality
We will consider the diverse strategies of adaptation employed in the case of Umberto Eco’s celebrated novel The Name of the Rose (1980) by examining the intricate passage from Eco’s novel to Jean Jacques Annaud’s film (The Name of the Rose, 1986) and the new Italian TV series (The Name of the Rose, 2019 – on air). We will look for some translational ‘continuities,’ trying a comparative semiotic analysis of some novel sequences and the film and t…
Intersemiotic translation: Theories, problems, analysis
This paper draws on Jakobson's tripartite division of the notion of translation, and Eco's discussion of the terms in his book on translation,Mouse or Rat? Translation as Negotiation(2003b). It focuses specifically on the issue of intersemiotic translation, questioning and showing what it means to "translate" from one "language" to another, such as from the novel to the medium of film, and to what extent the term translation is used metaphoricall…
Don Quixote , intermediality and remix: Translational shifts in the semiotics of culture
In Yuri Lotman’s terms intertextual relationships as active dialogues among texts and cultures should be the starting point for an analysis of the concepts of intermediality, cross-mediality and transmediality. This article considers adaptations and remakes as intermedial processes and remix practices as transmedial ones. The article demonstrates how the processes of transposition, remake and remix may sometimes be only partial, or in other insta…
